Indigenous Employment Vince Scarcella Boral Limited

Why address Indigenous Employment It makes good business sense It makes good social sense It makes good commercial sense It fosters new partnerships

Why address Indigenous Employment It makes good business sense Access to a pool of employees whose profile is suited to the needs of the Resource and Construction Industry Unemployment variations Geographical Locations Age and skills

Why address Indigenous Employment It makes good social sense Make a contribution to Australian life and society, now and for future. Cultural enrichment of the organisation (in line with HR Working with Diverse Employment programs). Better recognition as an ‘Australian’ brand.

Why address Indigenous Employment It makes good commercial sense Businesses entitled to funding for Indigenous staff under the ‘corporate leaders’ project (DEWR). Businesses entitled to funding for Indigenous staff under CDEP and other traineeships (DEWR). Skill shortage areas can be addressed using Apprenticeships and Indigenous Communities.

Why address Indigenous Employment It fosters new partnerships Indigenous Staff provide a link between the organisation and indigenous populated areas. Forge closer Corporate, Government and Indigenous networks. Opportunity to build a new client base with Indigenous groups being a major customer.

How to address Indigenous Employment Find experts to get a Plan or Strategy together. Utilise existing vacancies, don’t create a workforce where there are no vacancies. Provide training and support to both incoming Indigenous employees AS WELL AS existing staff and managers.

The Boral Experience This is what suited Boral businesses; There was no quotas set or affirmative action target setting. In line with Boral recruitment, Managers wanted it to remain ‘best person for the job’. Indigenous Employment Officer would be available to assist with recruitment and Indigenous Community consultation. Identified some new Boral tools we needed to be successful. Aligned with existing Boral tools to ensure success.

The Boral Experience The experiences Blue Circle Southern Cement, Maldon, NSW Midland Brick, Middle Swan, WA Orange Grove Quarry, WA Engineered Flooring, Murwillimbah, NSW

The Boral Experience Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council, Williamstown, NSW Timber mill Weipa, Nth Queensland Dealing with the locations that weren’t interested.

The Boral Experience Evaluation questions. 5 years on are we any good at it? Has it been cost effective? Has the culture of our workplace changed? What were the major surprises?
