Kompetenscentrum Förbränningsprocesser, KCFP Prof. Bengt Johansson Div. of Combustion Engines, Dept. of Energy Sciences

Power capacity by Swedish combustion engines produced annually Volvo Trucks 2005: trucks and busses with average power of 400 kW= MW Volvo Cars 2004: cars with average power of 150 kW = MW Scania 2005: trucks with average power of 400 kW= MW Saab Automobile 2004: cars with average power of 150 kW = MW Total power capacity produced per year = MW (Total installed wind power in Sweden 404 MW)

HCCI research in the world

The first conference dedicated to HCCI

HCCI?

HCCI = Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition  Kompressionsantändning av en förblandad bränsle/luft-blandning

Why HCCI?

HCCI Emissions vs. diesel HCCI 0,01 0,50 0,00 NOx PM * 0,05 USA 2007 AutoTechnology Oct. 2002, p 54

Brake fuel efficiency for 1.6 liter four cylinder VW engine

Clean locally or globally? Global emission (Greenhouse effect): CO2 i.e. fuel consumption Local emissions: NOx HC CO PM

Environmentally friendly ≡ no CO2?

A CO2 neutral alternative

Local Emissions ?

Some emission statistics from New York by the turn of the century… 200 m 3 liquid emissions per day 1000 ton solid emissions per day An army of tenths of thousands worked with transporting the emissions out from the city

Now time for the next step OttoDieselHCCI SACIPPC SACI= Spark Assisted Compression Ignition PPC= Partially Premixed Combustion

Partially premixed combustion, PPC Def: region between truly homogeneous combustion, HCCI, and diffusion controlled combustion, diesel Trade-off between NOx and HC, soot typical Combustion process not well known Soot the key feature

PPC potential
