1 Lufthansa German Airlines Our commitment in reducing climate impact and supporting climate research Dr. Andreas Waibel Milano COP 9 – Climate Change Kiosk Dec 09, 2003

2 our contributions... reducing emissions... supporting science Our climate mission... Fact Dilemma Need Mobility causes consumption of natural resources and generates emissions. But nobody wants to abstain from mobility. Environmental impacts due to our mobility have to be minimized on one‘s best. The interaction and mechanisms of our atmosphere are manifold and complex. The human being interferes into this complex system without knowing exactly the impacts. There is a big need to explore the mechanisms of our atmosphere.

3 Air traffic emissions CO 2 3150* H 2 O 1240 NO x 3 - 30 CO 0.7 - 2.5 SO 2 0.4 - 0.8 UHC 0.1 - 0.7 Soot 0.01 - 0.5 * EI = emission [g] burned fueld [kg]

4 CO 2 emissions from air traffic can not be neglected – but are still a minor source 25% 23% 21% 15% 10% 2% 4% power plants households industry burning of bio mass road traffic other traffic air traffic source: DLR 1998, AEA 1998

5 NO x abundance at flight altitudes originate from various sources Source: Lee et al., 1997 NOx concentration contribution at 30-60°N and 9-11 km altitude

8 Lufthansa takes active part in monitoring our atmosphere Since more than 9 years continuous measurements on each flight onboard of 3 A340-300 long haul aircrafts of atmospheric O 3 and H 2 O Significance: Cloud Formation, Climate Research, Chemistry (OH)

9 MOZAIC Operation 2.500 Flights per year (5000 vertical profiles) 1994–2002:19.000 flights with O3/H2O instrumentation 130.000 flight hours of O 3 and H 2 O data 2001-2002: 500 flights with additional CO 500 flights with additional NOy 200 flights with additional CO/NOy 5 Long-range Aircraft (A340-300) operated by: Lufthansa (2+1), Air France, Austrian Airlines, Sabena

10 Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container CARIBIC 1,6 t as of May 2004 planed operating time: 10 years one of the new A340-600 delivered to LH O 3, CO, CO 2, H 2 O, NO X, NO Y, Aerosole, organic compounds A further long term project to investigate our atmosphere An European atmospheric research project operated by Lufthansa

11 Specific fuel consumption has been continuously reduced... 4.5 l/100pkm average specific fuel consumption of the whole passenger fleet in 2002 27 % reduction since 1991... due to continuous fleet modernisation

12 Lufthansa has decoupled transport performance and environmental impact... PKT + 125 % NOx + 75 % Fuel + 57 % CO - 4 % UHC - 51 %... due to continuous fleet modernisation

13 In other words... PKT + 125 % Fuel + 57 % More than halve of the growth in the past 12 years could be performed in an enrionmental neutral manner More than halve of the growth in the past 12 years could be performed in an enrionmental neutral manner  68 % -50% 0% 50% 100% 150% 199119921993199419951996199719981999200020012002 delta (%)
