Germanys Problems Germany faced many problems after WWI. It lost land and the industry and farms had been destroyed. Highways, bridges, and railroads had to be rebuilt. Basic items were scarce.
Hitler Gains Control Hitler promised to rebuild Germanys military. The Treaty of Versailles angered Germans. Hitler reinforces their anger. Hitler said he would get back Germanys lost land.
Hitler and the Nazis Hitler named chancellor of Germany in Nazis build their military power. Germans who spoke against them were put in prison or murdered. As Hitler gained power, he planned for war. Opened factories to build weapons.

Germanys War Tactics Germany quickly overran much of Europe and was victorious for more than two years by relying on a new military tactic called the "Blitzkrieg" (lightning war). Blitzkrieg tactics required the concentration of offensive weapons (such as tanks, planes, and artillery) along a narrow front.
The Battle of Britain comprised four phases: 1.Hitler bombers attack British ports. 2. Hitler attacks British ships. 3. The Blitz – Beginning September 7, 1940 the city of London was heavily bombed. Hitler hoped to destroy the morale of the British people. 4. Night Bombing - With the failure of daylight bombing raids Hitler began a series of nightly bombing raids on London and other important industrial cities. The Blitz and night bombings continued until Oct. 31.

The End of WWII In August of 1945, the war in the Pacific ends when the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing 120,000 civilians. Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945.
