Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Myths and Misconceptions o “There’s no money in physics” “There’s no money in physics” o “I like the idea of a physics degree but what actual jobs do physicists do?” “I like the idea of a physics degree but what actual jobs do physicists do?” “Surely, I can get a better job if I study something applied, like engineering?”“Surely, I can get a better job if I study something applied, like engineering?” o “A physics degree is great – if you want to teach physics” “A physics degree is great – if you want to teach physics” Untrue Physics leads to engineering NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Almost anything you want

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Why Physics? Develops many transferable skills –Numeracy, literacy, communication –Enquiring, ethical, enterprising and engaged –Skills sought after by employers Find graduates work many areas From

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Why Physics? Skills developed and used by graduates (HEA 2011)

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Some quotes from our alumni “I chose Physics for the slightly odd reason of not knowing what sort of engineer I wanted to be…” -Simon Andrews, Bus. Dev. Manager “Physics is a great basis in that it’s an academically respectable topic with which to demonstrate your intellectual credentials.” -Tom Black, CEO “I had no idea what I was going to do with my life but I believed that having a degree in physics would prepare me for almost anything” -Charlie Whyte, Director at SanDisk Corp. “…even in a career as far removed from physics as banking in the city of London, there are still advantages in having a background of scientific logic and methodology.” - Ian Allan, Banking

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Physics at Strathclyde Scottish Universities Physics Alliance SFC put £48 million into Physics in Scotland 2010 – 2017 The BIGGEST investment (£12 million) Strathclyde o Laser Driven Plasma Accelerators: fusion energy, X-Ray lasers, a world-unique “lab based” CERN technology for fundamental physics, chemistry and biology (medical) research o Physics and Life Sciences: interdisciplinary research on molecular medicine, diagnosis and therapies. o Quantum information: data storage & cryptography. o Condensed matter physics: developing the new generation of magnetic materials for data storage, optoelectronics and medical diagnostics. o Ocean Optics : detecting the effects of oceanic warming and pollution on the global eco-system.

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Physics Degrees MPhys – (5 Year Course) –Degree for professional physicist – research career BSc Physics – (4 Year Course) –General physics degree – non specialised career pathway BSc Physics with Teaching – (4 Year Course) –Offered in associated with HASS to produce graduates qualified to teach BSc Mathematics and Physics – (4 Year Course) –Joint with Mathematics and managed by Maths

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Degree Structure Optional physics + research project Year 5 Optional physics + research project Year 4 Physics + Mathematics Year 3 Physics + Mathematics Year 2 Physics + Mathematics + electives Year 1 Optional summer placement in either industry or EU Universities } MPhys final degree mark from performance in years Mechanics, Optics and Waves Quantum Physics and Electromagnetism Experimental Physics Intro. Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Entry Requirements 1 st Year entry and 1 st attempt at subject Minimum Entry Requirements based on Highers MPhys – at least AAAB including Physics and Maths BSc Phys – at least AABB including Physics and Maths BSc Phys with Teaching – at least AABB including Physics and Maths together with C in Higher English BSc Phys – at least AABB including Physics and Maths at A

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Entry Requirements 1 st Year entry and 2 nd attempt at subject If applicant does not meet minimum entry requirements at 1 st attempt Department will tailor offer to ensure that applicant meets requirements Offer depends on subjects taken –Repeat Higher - normally expect offer to be at A –Take Advanced Higher - normally expect offer to be at B NOTE if an applicant has a fail or grade D in either Physics or Mathematics the application will not normally be considered

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Entry Requirements 2 nd Year entry – Advanced Higher Advanced Highers AB (Physics and Maths) plus two other Highers at AB Advanced Highers ABB (inc. Physics and Maths) plus one other Higher at B Also offer exemptions from 1 st year classes if you do well in Advanced Higher Physics or A’ Level Physics

Admissions Event 16 th June nd Year Entry Advantages Strong applicants give conditional offer –Avoids problems with applicants de-coupling from school studies if receive UO for 1 st year entry –Applicants not repeating material already covered in AH therefore do not develop poor study habits in 1 st year –Applicants will be stretched in 2 nd year –Strong support offered by Faculty – mentors available if applicants want the additional support

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Entry Requirements 1 st Year and Curriculum for Excellence Physics will consider applicant’s performance at the end of Year 6 If student take, for example, 1 Higher Y4, 3 Higher Y5 and 2 Higher Y6 we will consider application.

Admissions Event 16 th June 1014 Recognised Higher Subjects For entry to Physics we require –Physics and Mathematics –English for Physics with Teaching Sensible qualification for all applicants Useful subjects –Chemistry, Computing, Engineering, Design and Technology Recognise other subjects but may not some include in offer if taken in 6 th year –Photography, Art, Music
