Minimum Entry Requirements MChem Chemistry (most places available) –Scottish Highers: BBBB or ABBC or AAB * –Advanced Highers / A Levels : BBC (2 nd Year entry) ACCE / CDD / FAC / Teaching (limited places available) –Scottish Highers: AABB or AAAC * –Advanced Highers / A Levels: ABB (2 nd Year entry) If sitting AH Chemistry – we expect a pass! (Condition set) Recognised as the most difficult portfolio of subjects H & AH in the same subject are counted only once

Entry Requirements (2) Advanced Highers –Can obtain 2 nd Year entry –Good for transition year –More confidence in 1 st Year subjects –Conditional offer in Chemistry AH is an incentive to work in S6 Summer School top-up available –Chemistry, Maths & Physics

Personal Statement / School Reference Every statement and school reference read by the team in Chemistry Enthusiasm for the subject Evidence of research, reading, knowledge of the subject, courses, University

2016 entry for Chemistry More competition for limited places Increasing interest in ‘Applied’ courses –Engineering, Forensic, Drug Discovery, Teaching Increasing focus on: –Industrial placements –Course flexibility –Accreditation –Career prospects

Opportunities for applicants Open Days September (Tues) & October (Sat) –A demonstration lecture –Short talks about each of the courses –Opportunity to ask questions Tour of the campus Student tour of the Chemistry Department Online Phone / Email

School Interactions Visits from school groups –Tour of the department and laboratories –A demonstration lecture –Laboratory session for S5 and S6 pupils Annual Meeting for Teachers of Chemistry Assistance with AH Chemistry investigations Chemistry at Work (S3)

All degrees: Royal Society of Chemistry MSci Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering: Institution of Chemical Engineers * MChem Forensic & Analytical Chemistry: Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences * MChem Chemistry with Teaching: General Teaching Council (Scotland) * * Dual accreditation unique in UK Professional Accreditation

Additional Information

The ‘classic’ highly-respected Chemistry degree Offers the greatest study and career flexibility 4 th Year paid Industrial Placement / or Research or Knowledge Exchange Placement Final year Research Project Flexibility / Ability to Transfer Career direction emerges through choice and experience If you enjoy all aspects of Chemistry and want to leave your career options as open as possible … this is the course for you Why … MChem Chemistry (with placement)?

Chemistry for those who see teaching the science as fundamental to social enlightenment, contribution and progress (or simply enjoy sharing it!) Identical breadth and depth to MChem Chemistry 4 th Year Professional PGDE Final year Research Project Flexibility / Ability to Transfer Flows from experience of good teaching UNIQUE IN THE UK Work as professional chemist … or a Chemistry Teacher Why … MChem Chemistry with Teaching?

Large scale and industrial (‘Hard hat chemistry’) Fuels, plastics, materials, electronics, reactors Responsibilities for public safety / environment Taught jointly Dept of Chemical & Process Engineering Bridges knowledge gap between chemists and engineers ‘Chartered Chemist’ and / or ‘Chartered Engineer’ Meets demands from Industry No industrial placement UNIQUE IN THE UK Opportunity for well-paid career £££ Why … MSci Applied Chemistry with Chemical Engineering (ACCE)?

Chemistry for those interested in relieving human and animal suffering Challenges well reported in media (e.g. flu, SARS, MRSA) Chemistry in a medicinal context to make drug molecules TEAMWORK: Medicinal Chemists work with many other professions…Pharmacologists; Biochemists; Immunologists; Pharmacists; Microbiologists Recognised as ‘front end’ of pharmacy and medicine Taught jointly with SIPBS Good career prospects in Pharmaceutical industry Why … MChem Chemistry with Drug Discovery (CDD)?

Why … MChem Forensic and Analytical Chemistry? Analysis: Working out what is present in very small samples Forensic Science: Analysis of very small samples - results are used in a court of law Analysis of trace evidence Drugs of abuse; Fire investigation; Toxicology and Alcohol; DNA analysis Analytical chemists: Analysis of foodstuffs, water supplies, air quality, pharmaceuticals, geological / archaeological samples, heritage artefacts, process analysis, bioanalytical … Good career prospects for analytical chemists Strathclyde long history of Forensic Science
