How does learning occur?

We all take in the world around us in different ways!

Learning takes place through 3 mental processes COGNITION CONATION AFFECTATIONthinking acting feeling If we look only upon one of these processes, we would be looking upon o o o o o nnnn eeee ---- tttt hhhh iiii rrrr dddd of who the child really is! How does learning occur?

COGNITION (thinking) An intellectual process by which knowledge is gained from perception or ideas. It refers to the process of encoding, storing, processing and retrieving information It is generally associated with the question What do I know?

When using cognition, learners initiate thinking by reviewing their bank of prior knowledge for clues on how to make sense of the current task. Throughout the cognitive processing, the learner seeks to identify what aptitude or intelligence is needed to crack the learning task. While identifying and initiating cognitive processing, the learner, simultaneously instigates the performance of the task.

CONATION (doing) The least familiar of the 3 learning processes. Derives from the Latin word “to do” It is the action part of our learning. It establishes the pace with which we use our own personal ‘tools’.

Conative performance consists of an individual’s natural talent to perform (skill), rate of response (pace), and desire to work alone or in groups (autonomy).

AFFECTATION (feeling) It is how the learner perceives his/her capacity to learn which in turn affects the learner’s motivation to learn. Many psychologists term this as ‘perceived self- efficacy’. It refers to the emotional interpretation of knowledge or incoming information. It has to do with self-esteem. It is a barometer of the learner’s confidence.

The interaction continues with the learner’s sense of status as a learner triggering a complementary level of self-esteem and producing an outlook of confidence and a willingness to persist in engaging in similar tasks in the future. I can do it

Learning is a process involving 3 mental processes Cognition (I think) Conation (I act) Affectation (I feel) Learning is building on prior knowledge and experiences.
