TALK IT OUT Conflict Resolution in the Elementary Classroom Lesson 2 Based on the book By Barbara Porro c 1996

Lesson 2 How To Cool Off

Problems and Feelings How do you know when you have a problem? What feelings go along with anger?

What is ANGER? When you have a problem, anger may be one of the emotions you feel. Anger is a signal something is wrong. Anger tells you that you want something to change. Anger is a normal feeling. Everyone feels angry sometimes.

Warning signs of ANGER What happens in your body when you are getting angry? Your heart pounds. Your breathing changes. Your muscles get tense. Your face gets red. There’s a knot in your stomach. There’s a lump in your throat.

How To Cool Off ANGER CHOICES You can be angry in a way that will make the problem bigger. Or, You can figure out what the problem is and try to solve it.

TALK IT OUT Model Step 1: STOP and COOL OFF

TALK IT OUT Model Story: “Kenny Keeps His Cool” From: Talk It Out by Barbara Porro, p. 124 Discussion Questions: What do you think would happen if Kenny hadn’t walked away? What happened to Kenny’s feelings while he was getting a drink? Why is cooling off an important first step?

TALK IT OUT Model Strategies for COOLING OFF

COOL OFF When Eskimo children feel angry or tense, they are encouraged to stare at a bird or a fish. This activity removes the child from the disturbing situation in the same way a bird might take flight or a fish might swim away. The children are also taught to return to the problem later, just as the bird or fish returns.

COOL OFF What are some strategies to cool off in school?
