EFONET Energy Foresight Network

Main features Coordination Action, FP7 14 partners (11 MS) + IEA + STOA (EP) Extensive network of experts Not an RTD project, but a discussion platform to: –Share and disseminate knowledge on energy foresight methods and practice –Provide input to EU policy makers Duration: 2 ½ years Resources: –ca. 80 person.months –Support of external experts 18 Workshops and 1 Conference

Overall objectives of the EFONET project The ultimate objective of the EFONET project is to assess the contribution that current knowledge on energy foresight methods and on their practical application can provide to energy policy making, specifically in the framework of the transition towards a sustainable and low carbon energy system.

Overall objectives of the EFONET project In particular, EFONET aims at providing policy relevant inputs to the EC for the formulation, review and evaluation of European energy policies, notably in relation with:   the Review of the EU Energy Strategy   the Action Plan for Energy Efficiency   the SET (Strategic Energy Technology plan)

5 main themes Methodological approaches to energy foresight End use energy efficiency strategies Foresight in the transport and mobility sector Energy technology integration and scenarios Acceptability and development conditions How can foresight methodologies be improved to arrive at a “European Energy Foresight”? What are possible pathways to implement new energy consumption patterns in the residential and industrial sectors? How can conventional technologies and fuels be substituted? Which new transport services and related technologies? How can energy scenarios (and models) integrate current and future technologies? Can we measure social acceptability of energy technologies and understand how it will affect demand patterns and technology use?

Main expected outputs  State of the art reports on methodologies and practice of energy foresight in the 5 thematic areas  Policy briefs aim to provide contributions to specific policy priorities and EU orientations,  Country Reports summarising SoA on energy foresight methods and their application across the EU.

The EFONET workshops Each of the 18 Thematic Workshops (WS) will gather about 20 persons each Methodological approaches to energy foresight WS3.1: Energy foresight & policy making WS3.2: Energy foresight & industry decision making WS3.3a: Lessons learned from national energy foresight exercises WS3.3b: Participatory energy foresight on EU level – how to overcome cultural and language barriers? WS3.4: Better integration of quantitative and qualitative methodologies on European level End use energy efficiency strategies WS4.1: Low and very Low Energy consuming buildings WS4.2: New approaches and concepts for the EU Ps WS4.3: Increasing the energy efficiency in the Industrial processes Foresight in the transport and mobility sector WS5.1: Technologies for hybrid vehicles: from “soft” hybrids to plugable hybrids WS5.2: Technologies for fuel cells and hydrogen in road transport WS5.3: Biofuels, electricity and hydrogen as future energies for transport WS5.4: New technologies for new transport services, for passengers and freight Energy technology integration and scenarios WS6.1: Identification of success and failure criteria of past projections WS6.2: Comparative analysis of present future energy scenarios – storylines and visions up to 2050 WS6.3: Technology integration Acceptability and development conditions of energy technologies WS7.1: New technologies and barriers related to social acceptability WS7.2: Behavioural changes - backcasting and future trends WS7.3: International collaboration for developing technologies: turning technology into a public good WS7.4: Policy tools to speed up technology development and dissemination
