Presentation transcript:

Partitive Articles When you’re talking about a whole item, use un, une or des before the noun: Je veux un croissant. I want a croissant. But, when you’re only talking about a portion of the item, use the partitive articles du, de la, de l’ or des (some/any) in front of the noun: Tu veux du beurre? Do you want some butter?

Examples une tarte de la tarte une omelette de l’omelette

Examples un poulet du poulet des céréales

In French, you always need an article, even when it’s omitted in English: Je prends des toasts et de la confiture. –I’m having toast and jam. (Some is implied & can be omitted in English.)

NOTE All forms of the partitive (du, de la, de l’, des) change to de or d’ in a negative sentence just like un, une & des do: –Je veux un croissant. I want a croissant. –Je ne veux pas de croissant. I don’t want a croissant. –Tu veux des oeufs? Do you want some eggs? –Je ne veux pas d’oeufs. I don’t want any eggs.
