2 Review Remember: Contractions with de and definite articles: De + le= du De + la= de la (no change) De + l’ = de l’ (no change) De + les = des

3 The Partitive To say you want part of or some of an item, use de with the definite article that goes with the item (literally “of the”) Called the partitive Masculine Singular= du bacon Fem. Sing. = de la confiture Sing, Vowel= de l’omelette Plural= des céréales Tu veux du beurre? Do you want some butter? Je veux des oeufs. I want some eggs.

4 2. In French, you always need to include the article, even though it’s omitted in some cases in English. Je prends des toasts et de la confiture. I’m having toast and jelly. (“some” is implied) 3. To say you want a whole item (or several whole items), use the indefinite articles un, une, des Remember in a negative sentence, un, une, des become de Je veux un croissant. I want a croissant. Je ne veux pas de croissant. I don’t want a croissant.
