The pronoun en is used to replace a noun that is introduced by de or any form of de – du, de la, de l’, des. En refers mostly to things. Tu veux du sirop? -Oui, j’en veux. (Do you want some syrup? - Yes, I want some.) Vous parlez des médicaments? - Oui, nous en parlons. (Are you talking about the medications? -Yes, we’re talking about them.) Tu veux prendre de l’aspirine? - Non, je ne veux pas en prendre. (Do you want to take some aspirin? – No, I don’t want to take any.)

2 You also use en with numbers or expressions of quantity. En is often
translated as “of them” in sentences of this type. Sentences of this type can refer to things and people. Tu as des soeurs? -Oui, j’en ai trois. (Do you have any sisters ? -Yes, I have three of them.) Combien de cousins avez-vous? - Nous en avons beaucoup. (How may cousins do you have? - We have a lot of them.) Il y a des oeufs dans le frigo? - Non, il n’y en a pas. (Are there any eggs in the fridge? - No, there aren’t any.)

3 Like other object pronouns, en is place directly in front of the
conjugated verb or in front of the infinitive if there is one. La fille en prend. La fille va en prendre.
