Multicultural Literacy January 29, 2014

Culture 1. What first comes to mind when you think of the Middle East region? 2. Are there specific countries that you know more about than others? 3. Where do you think these ideas come from? 4. Have you traveled to the Middle East or know anyone from there?

Culture 1. Look at the map on National Geographic’s Hot Spot: Iraq web site. 2. Read the text accompanying the maps and take notes about whether the information in the text supports or refutes your original thoughts about the Middle East region in general and about specific countries. 3. Write down anything you learned from the maps that surprised you. 4. Read the series of articles documenting daily life in Iraq.

Culture Compare our country to that of the Middle East based on one aspect of daily life. 1. What are the similarities and differences? 2. Why do you think the differences exist?

Culture 1. With the blank outline map of the Middle East, fill in the names of countries, capital (and other large) cities, bodies of water, and other important geographical features. 2. With a partner, choose one aspect about daily life in Iraq or the Middle East. (e.g., religion, education, sports, or the arts). Find out more about your subject using online sources (I would start with the one you’ve already been on). 3. Create a presentation about the topic you chose. It could be a PowerPoint, poster, photo essay, or some other multimedia element.
