2 Review Longitude and latitude are used to:

3 What is a Political Map? A Political Map shows the boundaries and locations of political units. Political units are communities that are united under a government. Countries, states, counties, cities, and towns are political units. Many features depicted on a political map are made by humans.

4 What is a Physical Map? Physical Maps: A physical map shows the location and the topography, or shape, of the Earth’s geographic forms.  You use the SCALE to find the elevation.

7 How do you tell the difference between the maps?
Ask: Is the main focus of the map made by humans or nature? Made by humans? ➔ Political Map Made by nature? ➔ Physical Map How to tell the difference between a physical and political map: Identify what the map is showing.

8 Take two! Take two minutes with your elbow partner and read your notes to them. Together, circle the key words in your notes. These are the words that you both consider most important!

9 Describe Resource Maps
Resource maps show the natural resources found in a region. Use the map key to find the location of resources.

10 Political or Physical? Number 1-6 on your notes paper.
Around the room are 6 different maps. Travel around the room SILENTLY and write down whether you think the maps are physical or political. Return to your seats when you have seen all of the maps.
