Democracy: Who can participate? In a democracy power is in the hand of the people A direct democracy exists where the will of the people is translated into law directly by the people themselves. In an indirect democracy, a small group of persons, chosen by the people to act as their representatives, expresses the popular will. What type of democracy do we practice in the US?

Characteristics of a Democracy 2 major forms: Parliamentary and Presidential

Presidential Democracy President (Executive Branch) is separate from the Legislative Branch Both branches have separate powers to check one other and are equal in power Both are elected separately Invented and used by the USA Remy, Richard C., United States Government- Democracy in Action (Columbus, OH: Glencoe, McGraw-Hill, 2006)

Parliamentary Democracy Executive is made up of the prime minister and the cabinent. The prime minister AND his cabinet are all members of Parliament (Legislative Branch) Leading political party in Parliament choose the Prime Minister and cabinet to lead the country THEREFORE: The Executive Branch is chosen and controlled by the legislative branch Citizens elect leaders to Parliament (legislative branch) Head of majority party in Parliament becomes Prime Minister (Executive Branch) Prime Minister chooses his Cabinet (but they are all still party of Parliament) Remy, Richard C., United States Government- Democracy in Action (Columbus, OH: Glencoe, McGraw-Hill, 2006)
