where did I first experience a Chautauqua -Type Performance? Television! Remember these ? name the characters and Actors! Why is this not a Chautauqua Presentation?

Questions Who was this? Actor? Was this a Chautauqua presentation? Why or why not? Another example!

Who is this? Actor? Chautauqua Presentation?

How do you do Chautauqua? Chautauqua is a theatrical transformation of time, It is grounded in careful scholarship and a disciplined format, It magically transports you into the past. You can engage in discussion with a person living in that time.

What are the parts of a Chautauqua Presentation?

I: Chautauqua performer portrays an historic figure in full costume, speaking in the first-person, so intriguing that you to want to know more about them!

II: The Chautauqua scholar in character, answers questions that the historical figure could or would have answered truthfully.

III: Finally, the Chautauqua scholar steps out of character to answer questions about their research, and the development of their character presentation.

The Idea! How can we make history and biography come alive for students! How can we integrate English, History, Communications and even Technology skills? What about Academic Standards? How do we assess this? Can we use Chautauqua as a teaching and learning model for students?

History Day

The performance category can be on of the most exciting ways to participate in History Day, because it is the only category in which students present their research live. Entries in this category must have dramatic appeal, but not at the expense of historical information. Creativity is the key here, and students must make effective use of their 10-minute time allowance. Performance Category
