ENGLISH IV Unit 1 Day 20- Revision/Editing

It’s Wednesday! Do-now: Independent and Dependent Clauses Review: Put into your notes if you think you need review… Independent clauses- have a subject, verb, and express a complete thought.  E.g. Ms. Stitt, my teacher, wants her students to be strong at grammar. Dependent Clauses- has a subject/verb, but does not express a complete thought. Will often start with one of these words: after, although, as, as if, because, before, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, when, whether, while.  E.g. When Ms. Stitt, my teacher, wants her students to be strong at grammar. **You DO NOT want dependent clauses- they don’t make sense by themselves.

Practice: Dependent or independent? 1. Jim studied at Caribou Coffee for his reading quiz. 1. Independent- has a subject, verb, and expresses a complete thought. 2. When Jim was at Caribou Coffee. 1. Dependent: What happened at Caribou Coffee? 3. Although he didn’t do a lot of work. 1. Dependent: Starts with although and doesn’t finish the thought. 4. Although he didn’t do a lot of work, he was still happy he went. 1. Independent- expresses the rest of the sentence. 5. After he went to Caribou. 1. Dependent- what happens after he went to Caribou? Not a complete thought.

Tip of the day:  Correct or incorrect? He threw that ball further than anyone I’ve ever seen throw it!  INCORRECT: should be farther, because it’s a distance.  Correct or incorrect? I didn’t know weather I should go outside because it’s so cold.  INCORRECT: Should be whether- debating between two choices.  TIP #15: “Fewer” refers to numbers. “Less” refers to an amount.  E.g. Why did I get fewer M&Ms than her?! GRR. (You can count M&Ms in number)  E.g. I need to drink less coffee. (You can’t count coffee in numbers)

TASKS FOR TODAY: If you are done with one step, move to the next: 1. Finish your rough draft 2. Trade papers with five people and do the peer evaluation sheet. 3. Do the self-checklist/evaluation sheet 4. Work on making the revisions/corrections to your essay.

HW:  Finish your final drafts. Have a HARD COPY of the draft.

Exit:  Write down the four things you will bring in along WITH your final draft of your essay.

Do-now for Thursday Two of the many comma rules: 1) Use commas to separate two INDEPENDENT CLAUSES (full sentences) that are joined by a conjunction (FANBOY) 1) E.g. The Notre Dame game was over, but the crowd refused to leave. 2) Use commas after introductory clauses, phrases, and words. 1) E.g. While I was eating breakfast, I checked the weather and saw that it was snowing outside!
