4 Windows Live Messenger With Windows Live Messenger you can chat and stay in touch with colleagues and students in real-time for free! Millions of people use Messenger every day. Here are some great things you can do using Messenger: Chat in real-time Chat with up to 20 of your contacts at the same time Make it reflect your mood - it’s fully personalized Keep up to date with everyone in your network Use the voice, video and interactive gaming features Share photos or create a short video For more information check out:

6 Windows Live Messenger Get Windows Live Messenger If you don’t already have Windows Live Messenger on your PC, you can download it for free. You will need to be connected to the Internet. If you already have Messenger please go to slide 9. Click Download. Click Run.

7 Windows Live Messenger Get Windows Live Messenger Click Run again. Click on Messenger and Install. If you want to install other Windows Live programs at the same time you can select them by clicking the appropriate check boxes.

8 Windows Live Messenger Get Windows Live Messenger Click Continue. It is recommended to check the Set your search provider box to set Bing as the default search provider and to check the Set your home page box to set MSN as your browser home page. Messenger will open up automatically. Enter your Windows Live ID and password and click Sign in. Check the Remember me box for Messenger to enter your Windows Live ID automatically when it opens. Check the Remember my password to keep your password entered. Check the Sign me in automatically box if you want to log on to Messenger automatically when you turn on your PC and it is connected to the Internet.

10 Windows Live Messenger Add a contact (continued) Click Add a contact or add people you know. If you click add people you know go to step 7. Enter the Instant messaging address of the person you want to add to Messenger. If the person has a mobile number you can enter their mobile device number to send instant messages as text messages. Click Next.

11 Windows Live Messenger Add a contact (continued) Enter your own message if you wish. Click Send invitation. You can add this person to your online profile page if you wish. Click Close.

12 Windows Live Messenger Add a contact If you click add people you know: Enter your name in the empty fields and click Save. Check the box to allow everyone to see your last name so people on Windows Live can connect with you.

13 Windows Live Messenger Add a contact (continued) Enter the address of a contact that you would like to invite to your Messenger address book and click the arrow button. Click Select from your contact list to add people from your Contact list in your . All contacts in your existing address book in Windows Live Hotmail will already be automatically added to the Windows Live Messenger contact list. This does not apply to Outlook Live. Enter an optional invitation message in the field and click Send invitation.

14 Windows Live Messenger Add a contact (continued) Repeat steps 3 to 4 until you have invited all your contacts. The contacts will be shown as offline until they are online and accept the invitation.

16 Windows Live Messenger Buddy list Window Header Your personal photo and status message Groups Create a group for your buddies Buddy button shows the availability of your contacts: Green: available White: offline Red: online but busy Away: not on your PC Share your status or a personal message Quick access to your inbox Show menu button displays the header menu

17 Windows Live Messenger Conversation Window Main menu: This is where you can share Photos, Files, start or stop a Video call, see a list of Games, see a list of Activities, Invite someone to your conversation, or Block this contact from seeing or contacting you. Display picture Start or stop a webcam Text entry field Conversation window showing all message entered

19 Windows Live Messenger Send an instant message Double click the name of an available buddy. Alternatively right click on the name of the buddy and then click Send an instant message.

20 Windows Live Messenger Send an instant message (continued) The conversation window will open. Enter your message in the text entry field and click Enter on your keyboard to send your instant message.

21 Windows Live Messenger Send an instant message (continued) Select from a range of emoticons and winks (animated emoticons) to express your mood. Use a nudge to shake the conversation window and send an audio signal to attract your buddy’s attention if she/he is not replying Click the emoticon buttons below the text field to get the emoticon to appear in your instant message.

23 Windows Live Messenger Manage buddy list Right click the name of the buddy you wish to manage. You can choose from options such as: Block contact: if you block a buddy they will not be able to have online conversations with you or see your online status Delete contact: if you delete a buddy they will also be removed from your Contacts Edit contact: you can edit a buddy’s contact information

25 Windows Live Messenger Personalize Messenger Make Messenger your own! Click the drop- down arrow list next to your name. Set your status to reflect your availability. This will automatically change the colour of the button next to your name that your buddies see in their Messenger Window.

26 Windows Live Messenger Personalize Messenger (continued) Click Change display name and type your name as you would like it to appear to your Messenger buddies and click OK. Your new name will appear in your Buddy list window.

27 Windows Live Messenger Personalize Messenger (continued) Click the drop-down arrow list and click Change display picture... to select a picture that best suits your mood. You can choose a picture from: Regular pictures. Click Webcam picture.. to take a photo of yourself from your webcam or record 4 second video. Click Dynamic picture.. to take a photo of yourself from your webcam or record a 4 second video. Assign an emoticon for each picture or video. You can also select one of the emoticons you’ve assigned to change your display picture. Click Browse.. to select a photo of you from your PC.

28 Windows Live Messenger Personalize Messenger (continued) To change the background and colors of your Buddy list window click the drop- down arrow list and click Change scene... Click one of the scenes or click Browse... to access images on your PC. To select a colour scheme check a colored box or check the More colors... box. Click Apply to view the changes. Click OK when you are happy with your choice. To set your status message click the text field, type your message and click Enter on your keyboard for the change to apply. Your status message is your chance to let your friends worldwide know how you feel, what you are doing, or where you are.

30 Windows Live Messenger Share a photo To share a photo with one of your buddies, start a conversation or open a conversation window and enter your message, then click Photos. Click the photo you wish to insert and click Open. This inserts the photo into your conversation and makes it visible to you and your buddy.

32 Windows Live Messenger Access Messenger from your mobile Mobile Messenger makes it easy for you to communicate and stay in touch with people on the on go or when you are using your mobile device. To get started enter this URL into your mobile device’s browser: Mobile.live.com

33 Windows Live Messenger Access Messenger from your mobile (continued) With Mobile Messenger you can: Stay in touch when you can't speak out loud (for example in meetings, or on the bus) View your contact list and add new contacts See the status of those on your contact list (see who's online, offline, or mobile) Chat with multiple people at the same time in group chats Send and receive emoticons
