Where we are 17 Springfield Mount Old Earth Sciences Building SCR lvl 8 (ex-GETECH) Garstang Hyde Terrace ©2008 Google - Map Data ©2008 Tele Atlas Faculty Finance Office

Geological Science: 120 credits Core courses, 110 Credits Optional/elective courses The distinctive qualities of Year Environmental Geology: 120 credits Geophysics: 120 credits

Module choices You must have 100 credits at each level to gain an honours degree There are disadvantages in choosing credits from the level below, so we strongly advise that you do not take Level 1 modules, (except Level 1 Physics modules in GP) It may be that next year you do take a Level 2 module to create a coherent portfolio of courses You should confirm your module choice online at the end of October: date tba

Petroleum Track If you are on the Petroleum Track you MUST go and see Luisa to check that your module choices are compatible. If you are interested in the Petroleum Track, check the website then go and see Luisa. GP students interested in the petroleum industry should take: SOEE 2050, 2062 and 2085 Additionally, 2075 is encouraged

Registration Online If you haven’t done it yet, do it very soon! Choosing modules: online

Timetables You do not get a paper timetable Your personal timetable is on the web Check this!

What is different? Level 2 is not like Level 1 You work harder You work to a higher level The most common mistake is to work a lot harder but fail to step up an academic level Have a look at the details on the web site for your programme of study Year 2 - View timetableView timetable [Learning Outcomes, Transferable (Key) Skills, Assessment, Learning Context]

Assessment There are penalties for the late submission of work: 5% per day Stating the obvious: Late work (and failure to submit work) can equate to failed modules Level 2 work counts towards your final degree classification, so get the work handed in on time!

Plagiarism Copying from: Other students Directly from books From web pages There are SEVERE penalties; see the student handbook DON’T DO IT!

Progression You need to pass 100 credits to progress to Year 3 (on the honours programme). What happens if you fail a module? You have to re-sit in the summer. 1. This makes a complete mess of your summer holiday. 2. If you fail a second time you cannot progress immediately to Year 3.

Year abroad and industrial placement opportunities If you are interested in changing from the 3-year course to one of the 4-year courses, please ask. Transfer is dependent upon academic performance: normally >60

Keeping in contact with the School For various reasons we need to know how to find you. PLEASE TELL US Your mobile phone number Of any change of address Check your University regularly Check your pigeon hole in the School

Who do you approach for advice? In difficult circumstances contact the Student Support advisor: Julie Philpott

Attendance If you miss sessions, we will call you in to talk to the programme manager. If attendance remains poor a formal warning is issued. This may result in exclusion from the University (6 cases of year 2 students in 2005/6).

How you can make this School better Constructive criticism is welcomed Use student evaluation forms Consider standing for the staff-student committee Attend the student forums The staff-student committees will be sorted out next week

Supporting Documentation You should have: The Undergraduate Student Handbook Programme Handbook

Important information for GP You have a field trip very soon, (3 rd -5 th October). The pre-trip meeting is on Tuesday 30 th Sept at 2.00 pm in EC Stoner Seminar room 8.60.

We will be here until 3 pm to answer any questions
