What happens if I don’t pass first time? A guide for Undergraduate students
DOES THIS APPLY TO ME??
This guidance applies to all undergraduate students.

2. What does the University mean by “Re-presentations”, “Resits” and “Retakes with Attendance”?
informal opportunity to submit failed coursework again, to try to use feedback to bring the mark to a bare pass;
work is re-presented before exams [deadlines given by academic Departments];
new mark replaces the original;
free of charge.
Resit
formal opportunity to redeem confirmed fails on individual assessments [eg an exam or essay];
students informed of opportunity via formal results message in late June;
Examinations are normally held in August
2019: exams from August; coursework by 23 August;
Coursework is submitted on July 15th 2019.
Reassessments are capped at Grade E.
resits can raise the block aggregate to 40 BUT can’t increase an aggregate that is already 40+;
Retake with Attendance
take the entire block again, with full attendance, including submitting all assessments;
normally take place in the academic year following the fail;
no block can be retaken more than once;
if a retake is failed on 25-39, resits may be possible;
normally, retakes are uncapped [but NOT if you had originally failed due to non-submission or academic misconduct];
tuition fee charged.

3. If I Fail a Coursework Assessment, will I always be able to “re-present” it?
The academic Department concerned will normally give you a re-presentation opportunity for each coursework assessment you fail.
However, there are some exceptions……
Re-presentations will only be offered if the Department judges that this would be practicable, bearing in mind the nature of the assessment. This means, for example, that you might not be offered a re-presentation for a failed performance, class presentation or laboratory work.
Re-presentations will not normally be offered if you had failed due to plagiarism or other academic misconduct [unless you are at Level C[4] and you had not engaged in academic misconduct before].

4. What if I Can’t Progress because I didn’t Undertake an
Academic Assessment?
If you failed to undertake the work due to valid mitigating circumstances:
you will normally be given an opportunity to submit the work, with no penalty, during the Resit Period
If you simply failed to undertake the work:
if your aggregate mark for the block is 25 or higher, you may be able to resit the assessment in the summer Resit Period.
If your aggregate mark for the block is 0-24, you will normally be required to retake the entire block with attendance in the next academic year.
[Normally, you can only retake a block once.]
If you fail to submit during the Resit Period:
you would normally be entitled to no further opportunities to redeem your fail, and you would be required to leave the University.

5. What if I Can’t Progress because my Mark for an Academic
Assessment was Reduced to 0 for Late Submission?
You may, at the discretion of your Head of Department, be given feedback and an indication of the mark the assessment would have been given if it had been submitted on time.
If your aggregate mark for the block is 25 or higher, you may be able to submit a replacement assessment in the summer Resit Period.
If your aggregate mark for the block is 0-24, you will normally be required to retake the entire block with attendance in the next academic year.
[Normally, you can only retake a block once.]

6. What if I Fail One or More Academic Assessments that I
Need to Pass to Secure Professional Accreditation?
You will normally be entitled to all the resit/retake opportunities outlined in previous slides.
If, despite your fail, you meet the academic requirements for progressing to the next level of study or completing a degree, you can normally:
EITHER progress to a non-accredited version of your subject;
OR attempt to redeem your fail [in accordance with the previous slides] to become eligible for accreditation.

7. . What if I fail One or More Assessments based on
Professional Practice [eg School-Based Learning
or Social Work Practice]?
You may be given another chance BUT:
this is not guaranteed;
if you are allowed to redeem your fail, this could only be done when a suitable opportunity arose;
you might need to defer progression until you redeemed your fail.
If, despite your fail, you meet the academic requirements for progressing to the next level of study or completing a degree:
you can normally transfer to a non-accredited programme.
