Introductory meeting for Year 3 Geological Science students and Environmental Geology students Rob Chapman, (programme manager, EG) Nigel Mountney (programme manager, GS) Jon Mound (programme manager, GP)

Where we are 17 Springfield Mount Old Earth Sciences Building SCR lvl 8 (ex-GETECH) Garstang Hyde Terrace ©2008 Google - Map Data ©2008 Tele Atlas Faculty Finance Office

GS Year 3 Core courses, 80 Credits Optional/elective courses, The distinctive qualities of Year 3 EG Year Y3 Y4 Geophysics

Module choices You must have 100 credits at each level to gain an honours degree You must have 80 credits at level 5 to gain a Masters degree There are disadvantages in choosing credits from the level below, so we strongly advise you not to take Level 2 modules, unless they fit best with your portfolio of courses. Special skills modules are not double weighted for degree classification. You should confirm your module choice online by the end of October.

Petroleum Track If you are on the Petroleum Track you MUST go and see Luisa to check that your module choices are compatible. If you are interested in the Petroleum Track, check the website then go and see Luisa. GP students taking petroleum-related courses should take 3060, 3500 and 2085 (if not taken previously).

Registration Online Need to do this now

What is different? Level 3 is not like Level 2 You work harder You work to a higher level The most common mistake is to work a lot harder than last year but fail to step up an academic level Have a look at the details on the web site for your programme of study Year 3 - View timetableView timetable [Learning Outcomes, Transferable (Key) Skills, Assessment, Learning Context]

The Cyprus Field trip There are currently 48 people registered on this module. There are only 45 spaces! How do we decide who is going to go? You pay a deposit of £100 by the end of teaching week 1. The first 45 to pay will go. There will be a reserve list in case of drop out. You pay your deposit at the Faculty Finance Office, 33 Hyde Terrace. You need to see Naomi Armstrong. The outstanding payment for the trip is due by the end of teaching week 1, Semester 2.

Who do you approach for advice? First instance: the relevant administrator Geological Sciences, Environmental Geology and Geophysics: Luisa Nanovo

Timetables Your personal timetable is on the web (via the student portal) Check this!

Assessment There are penalties for late submission: 5% per day. Stating the obvious: Late work (and failure to submit course work) can equate to failed modules. This will impact on your degree classification.

Plagiarism Copying from: Other students Directly from books From web pages There are SEVERE penalties. Penalties for final year students are harsher than for years one and two, even if it is a ‘first offence’. DON’T DO IT!

Degree Classification 1 You need to pass 100 credits at Levels 1, 2 and 3 to gain an honours degree. Some modules are PFP. YOU NEED TO CHECK! What happens if you fail a module that you need for your degree? You have to re-sit next year (not in the summer).

Degree Classification 2 How do we work out what degree you get? If your Year 3 marks are better than your Year 2 marks: Final mark = 2/3 of your yr 3 mark + 1/3 of your yr 2 mark If your Year 2 marks are better than your Year 3 marks: Final mark = ½ of your yr 3 mark + ½ of your yr 2 mark

Attendance Most lectures will record your attendance, so we will know if you are not coming in to the University.

Keeping in contact with the School For various reasons we need to know how to find you. PLEASE TELL US Your mobile phone number Of any change of address Also check your university regularly And check your pigeon hole in the School

What to do in difficult circumstances First instance: contact the student support administrator: Julie Philpott

How you can make this School better Constructive criticism is welcomed Use student evaluation forms Attend the student forums Contribute to the staff-student committees (consider being a rep)

Supporting Documentation You should have: The Undergraduate Student Handbook Programme handbook

We will be available immediately after this meeting to answer any questions. Geoff needs to speak to you about projects.
