Placements & Health Professions Integral component of education for health professionals Involve significant time developing discipline-specific skills in a range of settings Are a regulatory requirement of many professions Labour intensive for university and for health organisations Are declining in number as practicing professionals manage increasing caseloads and workforce 'crisis'

Commitments to increase funded student numbers place further pressure on placement venues Employers wanting new skills in graduates - teamwork and interprofessional practice Limited placement options in health services for these new skills University fieldwork timetables are not aligned across the professions to provide interprofessional experiences in the placement context Placements & Health Professions

Interprofessional Education  Evolving recognition of IPE and collaborative practice from the World Health Organization (WHO) and The Network: Towards Unity For Health (TUFH).  Recognition of IPE in Australia – politically and academically (2004 Nations Health Workforce Strategic Framework)  Recognition of IPE on a local scale - The University of Queensland and major employers  Importance of incorporating practical IPE experiences for authentic learning. “Interprofessional Education occurs when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care” - The UK Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE, 2002)

Objectives 1. To complement current learning experiences with an IP learning placement 2. To enhance students’ knowledge of roles and value of other health professions 3. To increase students’ understanding of how IPE contributes to patient care 4. To enhance student attitudes towards working in IP teams 5. To overcome university structural barriers through an innovative extra- curricula strategy 6. To contribute to the evidence base for short, extra-curricula IPE learning activities Future Vision Establish the Health Care Team Challenge as a premier interprofessional event at local, regional, national & international levels. Stephen Robertson, Minister for Health Winning Team 2 present their management plan
