The Situation of Language – Learning in Gießen-Vogelsberg 2010 Based on interviews and questionnaire of teachers Dr. Herbert Schnell, Frankfurt am Main

Structure of Language Support System in Gießen-Vogelsberg Staatliches Schulamt ( Local Education Administration) 1 inspector as adviser 1 Regional adviser - English as foreign language ( teacher – only 2 hours of instruction less for consulting ) Vogelsbergschule: 1 School adviser only for English-teaching elected by English-teachers 2 teachers responsible in the QUILL-project

The situation of English – teaching in Hesse English is the first foreign language in all schools primary school – 3rd form (8 years old) - 2 / 3 lessons/week secondary ( 5th – 10th form) in all types of school – 4 lessons/week higher secondary education (Gymnasiale Oberstufe - 10/11-12/13) – 3 lessons/week Full-time vocational school (Fachoberschule) – 3 lessons/week

Second Foreign language and other Second Foreign language is obligatory in Real- and Gesamtschulen und Gymnasien Start: 6th/7th form ( Gymnasium) – 7th form other 4 lessons /week Languages: French ; in Gymnasium also Latin, Spanish Third Foreign languages: Russian, classic Greek, Special: migrants have lessons in their mother tongue e.g. Turkish

Form) Regional: comparative assessment in the project „Voneinander lernen“ (learning from each other) in LEA GI/VO
