1 LEGAL BASIS OF BILINGUAL TEACHING IN POLAND

2 Bilingual teaching is conducted in Poland since the school year 1991/1992. Originally, bilingual classes were only created in secondary schools. One class with one extended year of teaching (so called: “Zero class”)

3 Currently bilingual school function with branches in all stages of education, but especially in high schools, middle schools and elementary schools (grades IV- VI). In these schools the second language to be taught is: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian or Russian. The most common language in bilingual classes, especially in secondary schools, is English.

4 The framework curriculum of bilingual high schools with bilingual classes includes 190 extra hours of language training, which is an average of two hours per week more than in the regular non-bilingual classes. According to the Act on the educational system, in bilingual classes all school subjects must be conducted in two languages: Polish and English.

5 But: The school subjects must not be taught only in Polish or English. According to that Act on Bilingual classes the teacher can only implement some key words of English language, or can select only one activity from the whole lesson which will be conducted in a foreign language. The rest of exercises must be taught in mother tongue (Polish)

6 Bilingual classes can be conducted by a subject teacher whose speaks a foreign language at a level at least B2 or foreign language teacher who has obtained additional qualifications for teaching a given subject. Bilingual classes in our school: PE, Music & English

7 The legal basis for the existence of bilingual classes and schools constitutes the Act on the educational system and appropriate regulations of the Minister of Education : 1 / Article 3, paragraph 2b, Art. 3 point 2d Act of 7 September 1991. On the education system ( Dz.U.Nr 256, item. 2572, as amended. D. ), Constituting the possibility of creating bilingual schools and schools with bilingual classes;
