Tactile feedback 1/2 Tactile feedback is a method which gives feedback to the user when the UI has received a touch down event. Tactile feedback includes tactile vibra feedback and tactile audio feedback, which can be on or off regardless of each other. User has the possibility to switch these settings on/off from Profiles. Tactile feedback is given immediately when the user touches a predefined UI component. Tactile feedback (audio and/or vibra) is disabled when a call is coming in and during an active call. Other situations may be designed by applications. Tactile feedback: There are three levels for tactile feedback added to off mode. Level 1. is the weakest level. The feedback does not draw attention, but user notices the difference if it is turned off. Level 2. The feedback can be noticed, but it is not disturbingly strong. Level 3. is the strongest level. The feedback can be clearly noticed and is useful in noisy situations. Basic rules with the default actions include: Touch down gives a feedback (no feedback when touch is released). Touch down and drag gives basic tactile feedback from the first touch down event and then sensitive feedback every time when dragging reaches the next item. Touch down and hold does not differ from the touch down event unless there is key repeat functionality. Touch down and cancel gives feedback on touch down event on an object even though the touch would be then dragged outside the objects area before lifting. Changing the focus gives always a tactile feedback. Transition effects are shown normally when tactile feedback is on. Keypad tones still exist when tactile feedback is used. Tactile audio feedback has the same priority as keypad tones. There are also situations, which do not generate tactile feedback (some examples listed here): Tactile feedback is not given when the user touches a dimmed area, for example a dimmed button. Tactile feedback is not given when the user touches down outside some pop-up component in order to get it closed. For example, when user touches down outside the open Task swapping window. Tactile feedback 2/2 Tactile feedback is used in the following: Sensors: a double tap on the device by hand provides tactile feedback to the user in case of a successful interaction. Touch interaction (touch screen): interaction with the touched component has been successful. Touch UI home screen Home screen is a UI concept that offers users an easy way to access preferred customer services, applications and personal information directly from the phone’s standby mode. There are three different home screen themes in Nokia 5800 XpressMusic: Contacts bar, Shortcut and Basic. The Control pane area displays the shortcut buttons for the Dialler and Contacts applications. Single tapping on the button opens the application. The Dialler and Contacts icons are shown in all the home screen themes. Home screen shortcuts: tapping the clock activates clock settings: alarms and world clock as well as date and time settings tapping the date opens the menu of calendar and profiles tapping the right upper corner of the home screen activates the clock menu and Connectivity settings. Only the Dialler and Contacts icons are shown in the Basic theme. In the Shortcut theme, the following applications appear as default: New messages Calendar Radio Maps The default shortcuts may vary depending on the operator variant. Contacts bar Contacts bar is a default home screen. It is not customisable. You can select four favourite people with photos into the Contacts bar. The Contacts bar is displayed when you have added a contact into the Contacts bar. You can start the set-up by tapping the Add contact to Home Screen icon on the screen and follow the instructions on the screen. The Contacts bar home screen has the following details: Contacts field for image(s) of contacts Contact tools for communication, settings and closing Contact log field for communication events of the contact Web feed field Additional information: Contacts field: The Contacts field displays max four images that the user has selected. If the number of contacts is less than four, the Add contact icon is displayed as the last item in the row. Single tap on a contact image shows the Contact tools and Contact log field for the contact. NOTE: The Add contact icon is a shortcut to the Contact bar set-up. Contact tools: To communicate with your contact, select the contact and from the following tools: Make a phone call. Send a message. Modify contact information. Refresh the contact's web feeds. Contact log field: It includes latest communication events with the selected contact, for example: missed call, received call, dialled call unread SMS, read SMS, sent SMS unread MMS, read MMS, sent MMS unread email, read email, sent email Web feed field: The type (title, link, description) of the textual data and the order of the feed items are provided by the RSS service. Updated data is fetched from the RSS service to the phone by tapping the refresh button. When the Contact log field of a contact is opened, the feed rows are updated from the phone. Tapping an item in the feed row opens the RSS Feed Viewer. Touch UI input methods Two handed landscape usage Allows fluid work flows during longer periods of interaction and navigation within media galleries and players. Single handed portrait usage Optimised for fast and spontaneous and frequent tasks. Stylus A quick to access stylus carried in the battery cover allows precise input for hand writing recognition. Plectrum The attached plectrum gives rapid and carefree point input for selecting and navigating while on the move. Additional information: Some functions, such as handwriting recognition are designed to be used only with the stylus. The stylus is located in the back cover of the device. Important: Use only a stylus approved by Nokia for use with this device. Using any other stylus may invalidate any warranty applying to the device and may damage the touch screen. Avoid scratching the touch screen. Touch UI text input methods The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports three parallel text input methods to support different interactions and market areas: virtual ITU-T, HWR and VKB. All text input methods work in both orientations (portrait and landscape). All S60 languages are supported. User can tap any text input field to enter text. Touch UI text input methods - HWR Handwriting recognition (HWR) HWR provides a convenient input method for stylus-enabled touch variants. By using HWR, the user is able to write letters, numbers and punctuation marks using a natural way of handwriting with the stylus. HWR supports character by character recognition. By means of the HWR training feature, the user is able to teach the handwriting recognition engine his/her own way of writing the characters. The user is able to enter letters, numbers, symbols or punctuation marks by tapping the on-screen VKB. Virtual QWERTY keyboard works in both portrait and landscape modes. Portrait mode (Mini QWERTY keyboard) is optimised for stylus and landscape mode (Fullscreen QWERTY keyboard) is optimised for both stylus and finger use. The Fullscreen QWERTY has the same functions as the Mini QWERTY but it uses the whole display area. Touch UI input methods - tapping One tap To open an application or other element on the touch screen, you normally tap it once with your finger or the stylus. One tap is always used in the home screen status pane, dialler, phonebook, contacts bar, media bar and with the icon grid view. Touch UI input methods - double-tapping Double-tapping is needed, for example, to open list items in an application. Note that in the list view, the first item is already highlighted as default so only one tap is needed to open it. Dialler Using the on-screen Dialler the user can create phone calls manually by typing in the numbers. Dialler can also be used to send call concerned supplementary service requests to the network. Dialer is also used for non-call related actions, such as fetching information from the device itself (IMEI number, software version, inserting a PIN code). For PIN code only numbers are needed and shown in keyprints. Touch UI gestures Drag – slide your finger or the stylus on the screen when, for example, when browsing a web a page Swipe - slide your finger quickly on the screen. For example, to view the next or previous image in the Image viewer, swipe the image left or right. Scroll - to scroll up or down in a list that has a scroll bar, drag the slider of the scroll bar up or down. Scrolling speed increases when the finger is dragged further down the display, even outside the Main Pane. Speed decreases when finger is dragged closer to the focus. Zoom - zooming is done by tapping the screen, which brings up the controls (toolbar + zoom slider). Additional information The S60 Browser supports touch-screen input and navigation. In Nokia 5800 XpressMusic the user is able to scroll and interact with web content using the stylus or finger. Touch support is enabled for: Panning the web page both vertically and horizontally using the touch-enabled scroll-bars or by dragging the stylus to the edge of the display. Interacting with hyperlinks, buttons, and other active elements on the page. Interacting with form elements on the web page. These include select lists, radio buttons, check boxes, input fields, and form submit and reset buttons. A new touch-specific toolbar with access to common functions, including entering of web addresses/URLs. Context menus activated by a long tap on an element for quick access to browser features related to that element. Fast navigation using the Page Overview feature. A single tap moves the user to any area of the page. Activating menu items, toolbar buttons, soft-keys and other standard S60 UI elements. Interacting with browser plug-ins. Opening and navigating the list of bookmarks. Managing and viewing RSS/ATOM web feeds and feed articles. Tips and tricks 2/3 By tapping the clock on the home screen, user can access the clock. By tapping the profile name or date on the home screen status area, user can access profiles and calendar. By tapping the empty area on the status area, user gets a status pop-up window where user can access connectivity settings, clock and has detailed information about possible indicators, for example a shortcut to unread messages or Bluetooth. Tips and tricks 3/3 Menu is accessed by pressing the menu key at the bottom of the device. To switch between open applications, press and hold the menu key. Accelerometer for UI rotation can be set from Menu -> Settings - Phone -> Sensor settings To access applications such as the music player or browser at any time, tap the Media key to open the media bar, and select the application. To change the input method, the user can press the QWERTY icon and the input method list appears.
