Creating a Cross-University Joint Undergraduate Degree Program Ilsa Schwarz, Ph.D. Ashley W. Harkrider, Ph.D.

Creating a Cross-University Joint Undergraduate Degree Program – Financial Disclosure $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Ilsa Schwarz has no financial or nonfinancial relationships to disclose. Ashley Harkrider has no financial or nonfinancial relationships to disclose.

Why Might this Presentation Prove Useful to other Programs? Potential for increasing participation in undergraduate programs. Potential for increased revenue.

Background 2009 – The Dept. of Audiology & Speech Pathology was transferred from UTK to UTHSC The graduate program transferred, the undergraduate program did not. The undergraduate program was housed temporarily in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at UTK until it could be closed in 2014 Demand for the undergraduate program encouraged administrators to transfer it to UTHSC 2012 – The MOU for a joint degree program was approved by both campuses and THEC

Phase Out of Undergraduate Programs

Why Transfer the UG Program? Demand for the major continues to grow among undergraduates – increase in class sizes by 1/3. Faculty are teaching the UG courses without direct return from tuition. Courses will continue to be offered by ASP faculty to “levelers” The department transfer to UTHSC was successful with excellent administrative support, an increase in funding, and promise of new facilities.

Initial Department Plan Students to remain in Knoxville in a 3+1 format with 3 years as a UTK student and 1 year as a UTHSC student. Students take 3 years of UTK general education courses including “Intro to CSD” and then transfer to UTHSC for 1 year of CSD major courses. Tuition generated by CSD coursework to go to UTHSC. Program first proposed in 2011

Result of Initial Proposal UTK concerned over loss to graduation due to push to become “a top 25” university. Concerns by both universities over logistics (e.g., tuition transfer, student services, financial aid, administrative home for students in the initial 3 years).

Logistical Issues to Address Loss to graduation Tuition transfer Student fees and services (Vol Card, , student court, library) Academic calendar Financial aid Library access Grading scale Graduation requirements Method of degree conferral

Loss to Graduation Joint degree awarded by UTK and UTHSC – Avoids transfer of students in last year and both universities get credit for graduates

Tuition Transfer UG tuition at UTK and UTHSC will be the same for the 3+1 students. The first 3 years of tuition in the 3+1 goes to UTK. Tuition from the final year of the 3+1 goes to UTHSC. Tuition for non-majors taking CSD courses goes to UTHSC.

Student Fees and Services Vol Card – UTK card for food services, sports activities, rec center, etc. is provided for 3+1 UG students and all fees will go to UTK across all 4 years – Students will have a UTK address with underlying UTHSC account in 4 th year Disciplinary activities - will take place at UTK Disability services – administered by UTK

Academic Calendar All ASP students (UG and graduate) follow UTK not UTHSC academic calendar

Financial Aid, Scholarships, & Work Study Students can maintain or apply for scholarships on the UTK (years 1-4) or UTHSC (year 4) campuses. Work study in year 4 will be offered by UTHSC. Financial aid applications and awards will be handled by UTK in 1 st 3 years and UTHSC in 4 th year

Library Privileges Students can access the UTK library across all years and the UTHSC library once admitted to the

Grading Scale Grading scale will remain constant across all 4 years

Graduation Requirements Agreed upon by both campuses Listed in both UTK and UTHSC catalogs

Degree Conferral Diploma will reflect a joint degree in Audiology & Speech Pathology with the signatures of the UTK and UTHSC Chancellors and both university names on it Conferred during Department’s May graduation with Deans from the College of Allied Health Sciences (UTHSC) and the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (UTK) presiding.

Admissions Students will enter UTK and apply as pre-majors. After completion of 60 credits with a B or better average, including ASP 300, students may apply for conditional admission to the 3+1. Full admission takes place when 90 hours have been completed with a B or better GPA and a B or better in ASP 300.

Advising Students will be advised by UTK until they complete 90 credits. This will allow UTK to control student enrolments and meet UTK graduation requirements while they are taking UTK classes. ASP will begin advising at the end of the sophomore year (60 credits) so students will be ‘joint advised’ for the junior year. UTHSC advisors will advise on the major requirements, curricula and graduation requirements.

Advising “Students in the 3+1 joint degree program will be advised by UTK and UTHSC advisors in their first three years and then exclusively by the UTHSC Department of Audiology & Speech Pathology in their final year. A transition advising meeting will be arranged for students by the Department of Audiology & Speech Pathology at the end of the sophomore year. “

Advising “Advising for the 3+1 students will require 3 years of shared advising from UTK and UTHSC as Pre- Audiology & Speech Pathology majors. For those 3 years, all students and their credit hours will be associated with UTK. The Department of Audiology & Speech Pathology will provide regular advising in order to make sure that potential 3+1 students understand departmental requirements as well as the process used to transfer. In the senior year, all advising will be the responsibility of the Department of Audiology & Speech Pathology.”

Transition Plan “Students who have already taken some of the ASP classes will be allowed to work through a hybrid schedule until At that point, it is expected that all students in the program will be advised to meet the requirements of the 3+1 program. Those students entering the university in 2012 who declare an interest in the program will be advised to declare a Pre-Audiology & Speech Pathology major and take the courses in the 3+1 joint degree plan.”

Program Review and Maintenence “Program review will take place annually for the first 5 years to monitor joint program demand, any advising issues that may arise, graduation rates, and success in transitioning all students into the 3+1 program. After that time, program review will follow THEC schedules.”
