ALTERNATING POSSESSION NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 ALTERNATING POSSESSION The alternating possession procedure is the method of putting the ball in play by a throw-in when: a. A live ball lodges between the backboard and ring or comes to rest on the flange, unless a free throw or throw-in follows. e. Opponents commit simultaneous goaltending or basket-interference violations. f. The point of interruption cannot be determined as in 4-36-2c. R4-2-1 and R6-4-3 Rule

ALTERNATING POSSESSION NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 ALTERNATING POSSESSION The alternating-possession throw-in ends and the arrow is reversed when: a. R6-4-4 and R4-42-5 The opportunity to make an alternating-possession throw-in is lost only if the throw-in team violates. NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: A2 is fouled by B2 just after the ball leaves the official's hand on the jump ball to start the first extra period of play. Both teams are in the bonus. How is the alternating-possession arrow established? Ruling: The possession arrow is set toward Team B's basket when the ball is placed at the disposal of the free thrower, A2 (CB4.3.2). Play 1

NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: After the first period ends, the coach of Team B is assessed a technical foul. Team B has the possession arrow. How is this situation handled? Play 2

NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: After the first period ends, the coach of Team B is assessed a technical foul. Team B has the possession arrow. How is this situation handled? Ruling: Team A gets two free throws followed by a throw-in at the division line. The possession arrow is not reversed and Team B will get the next throw-in under the alternating possession procedure (CB6.4.1B). Play 2

NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: Shooter A1 is fouled attempting a two-point shot, which is unsuccessful. While the ball is in the air, the horn sounds to end the third period. As the official reports the foul, Team B's coach makes an inappropriate comment and is assessed a technical foul. Team B has the possession arrow. How is this situation administered? Play 3

Ruling: A1 will get two free throws as a result of the shooting foul. Team A will get two additional free throws as a result of the technical foul. The third period ends after the resulting free throws. Since no penalty or part of a penalty carries over from one quarter to the next, Team B gets the ball under the alternating possession procedure to start the fourth period (R5-6 Exp 3; CB5.6 Comment A). Play 3

NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: Following a held ball, Team A is given the ball under the alternating possession procedure. During the throw-in, A2 is called for a blocking foul while trying to set a screen. How is this situation administered and what happens to the arrow? Play 4

Ruling: Team B is awarded a throw-in from the spot out-of-bounds closest to where the foul occurred. Because the foul occurred before the alternating possession throw-in ended, Team A retains the arrow and will get the next throw-in under the alternating possession procedure (R6-4-5; see CB 6.4.5A). Play 4

NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: Team B has the arrow. Following a held ball, you give the ball to Team A for a throw-in by mistake. A1 passes to A2 who is dribbling up the court when you realizes a mistake has occurred. What would you do? What would happen if B2 kicked A1's throw-in pass and then you recognized the error? Play 5

Ruling: Once the throw-in ends, it is too late to change anything. Do not reverse the arrow and Team B will get the next throw-in under the alternating possession procedure (CB6.4.1D). If B2 kicks the throw-in pass, the alternating possession throw-in did not end so the mistake is corrected. Team B gets a throw-in under the alternating possession procedure, after which the arrow is reversed (CB6.4.1D). Play 5

NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: A1 takes a shot. While the ball is in the air, A5 and B5 are pushing each other to get better rebounding position. You call a double foul and: (a) the try is unsuccessful; (b) the try is successful. What do you do? Play 6

Ruling: There is no team control while a try for goal is in flight. In (a), since the try was unsuccessful, there is no obvious point of interruption. Play is resumed with an alternating possession throw-in nearest the spot where the ball was located when the double foul occurred (see CB4.19.8E). In (b), since the try was successful, the point of interruption is a throw-in for Team B from anywhere along the end line (see CB4.19.8E). Play 6

NFHS Basketball MILWAUKEE OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION 2012-13 Play: A1 is fouled but the table fails to inform you that it was Team B's seventh team foul. Team A is given a throw-in and A1 inbounds the ball to A2 who is tied up by B2 resulting in a held-ball. The error is discovered following the held ball call. The arrow favors: (a) Team A; (b) Team B. What do you do? Play 7

Ruling: In (a), award the merited free throws and continue play from that action since Team A had not lost possession between the error and when it was recognized. However, in (b), the lane is cleared for A1's merited free throws and play resumes from the point of interruption which is an alternating-possession throw-in by Team B (CB2.10.1F). Play 7
