Subject Selection Years 9 and 10 in 2020 Steve Lang – HOD Middle School – slang58@eq.edu.au middleschool@kedronshs.eq.edu.au

Middle School – Year 9 & 10 in 2020 The transition towards Senior School: supportive but less scaffolded high expectations of behaviour, effort and uniform three way partnership – students find their voice developing autonomy, initiative and confidence developing positive study skills, organisation and good habits

What we know General: Good study habits are vital, even in Year 9 and 10 Timetable, Assessment Planner converted to an Assignment Planner and Study Plan is beneficial to student success Technology can be temperamental – in Senior there is no allowance for a Computer failing, best to get into good habits early (backing up often) to avoid issues

What we know General: Conversations about learning help all involved Open ended “What was the most interesting thing you did at school today?” “What was the best lesson at school today and what did you do?” “ What did you learn in **** today?”

What we know Subjects Electives are a perfect opportunity to explore – breadth is important and beneficial in Senior The large percentage of our top achievers in Year 12 will be involved in subject across the board. Often involved in Music and Sport

What we know Subjects Other than Languages and Music no elective is prohibitive as you reach Year 11 and 12 Practical (Manufacturing/Engineering/Hospitality) subjects are very popular – but numbers are limited

Subject Selection Handbook

Subject Selection Handbook Again, we have opted not to print the Handbook: This saves $1440 in printing costs and 24,000 pieces of paper Every Year 8/9 parent and student will be sent a digital copy Paper copies (if needed) are available from Middle School Office Paper Subject Selection forms also available from Middle School Office All the above available to download from Kedron SHS Website

Making Decisions As an overall plan, it is suggested that you choose subjects: you enjoy in which you have already had some success which will help you achieve your chosen career goals, or at least keep your career options open which will develop skills, knowledge and attitudes useful throughout your life.

Sport and KedCare All Middle School students participate in compulsory Sport on a Tuesday (Year 9) and Wednesday (Year 10) afternoon. Additionally, Kedron SHS has a whole school approach to welfare entitled ‘KedCare’; which is one 70 min per week. During these lessons, Middle School students cover topics which include, but are not limited to: Roles & Relationships Goal Setting Managing Emotions Breaking the Bullying Cycle Decision Making Cyber Safety Careers

Year 9 Compulsory Subjects There are five compulsory subjects in Year 9: English Mathematics Science Health & Physical Education (1 Semester) History (1 Semester)

[1, year long, Languages subject & 2, semester long, electives] Year 9 (2020) Electives Option One Students choose a Languages subject (Japanese, French, Chinese, Spanish, Auslan) if they have studied the subject in Year 8. They will then select this same Language subject for both Semester 1 & Semester 2. Students then choose one Arts (Art, Music, Media Studies or Drama, Geography, Logic) and one Technology (Food Studies, Manufacturing Technology, Engineering Technology, Digital Technology, Graphical Design, Business Studies or Computer Education) subject as semester long electives. Logic and Reasoning is now an elective option and can be taken either as a semester or 2 semester elective. [1, year long, Languages subject & 2, semester long, electives]

[4, semester long, electives in total] Year 9 (2020) Electives Option Two If students are not studying a Languages subject in Year 9, they will choose one Arts (Art, Music, Media Studies or Drama, Geography, Logic) subject for Semester 1 and a different Arts subject for Semester 2. Logic Students will also choose one Technology (Food Studies, Manufacturing Technology, Engineering Technology, Digital Technology, Graphical Design, Business Studies or Computer Education) subject for Semester 1 and a different Technology subject for Semester 2. Logic and Reasoning is now an elective option and can be taken either as a semester or 2 semester elective. [4, semester long, electives in total]

HPE Extension (HPX) invitations to be sent out to students in the next week. If absent this will be in their form roll. Students who accept a place on this course can choose to take it on either Line 2 or 4, not both. All subjects are numbers dependant. All electives are great opportunities. Important Notes
