2 What is a QCE? A QCE is the Queensland Certificate of Education
It demonstrates to employers, tertiary institutions & the wider community that school leavers have met the set standard by completing a learning program with sufficient breadth & depth.

3 Which students can get a QCE?
Everton Park S.H.S. aim is for EVERY STUDENT to attain a QCE by the completion of Year 12

4 How does my child get a QCE?
There are several requirements that must be met for a QCE to be awarded in the new system

5 QCE requirements

6 Subject point values

7 QCE changes Each subject can contribute a MAXIMUM of 4 QCE points
(1 point for each Semester) Units 1 and 2 (two semesters in Yr 11) are worth 1 point each if the student receives a SATISFACTORY ( A, B or C ) Units 3 and 4 (two semesters in Yr 12) are COUPLED and worth 2 points TOGETHER if the student gets a C or better (student can not get 1 point for Units 3 and 4, it’s 0 or 2)

8 QCE changes D result for a semester/unit CAN NOT be used as a conceded point anymore School MUST report the student’s result to QCAA immediately after Units 1 and 2 (Yr 11) School MUST report to QCAA after each student’s assessment task in Units 3 and 4 (Yr 12) for a General subject For General subject assessment, the school MUST make assessment available for a CONFIRMER to check at set dates

17 ATAR

18

19 Do I need an ATAR? The ONLY reason you need an ATAR is if your child has aspirations to go to UNIVERSITY in the first two years after completing Grade 12.

20 How do I get an ATAR? Another requirement is that an ENGLISH subject must be PASSED

21 How are EPSHS subjects classified?
General Subjects Applied Subjects Internal VET course Short Course English Geography Essential English Cert III Active Volunteering Literacy General Mathematics Modern History Essential Mathematics Numeracy Mathematical Methods Physical Education Sport & Recreation Chemistry Visual Art Furnishing Skills Physics Drama Business Studies Biology Music Hospitality Practices Visual Arts in Practice Drama in Practice

22 How is a subject classified as GENERAL?
SIMILAR ACADEMIC RIGOUR TO OP SUBJECTS EXIT RESULT: Mark out of 100

23 How is a subject classified as APPLIED?
Results based on 4 Internal Assessments EXIT RESULT: A - E SIMILAR SKILL BASED RIGOUR TO SAS SUBJECTS

24 How is the ATAR calculated?
ATAR calculation • Calculated by combining best five subject scaled scores. • Scaled scores will be derived using a process of inter-subject scaling. (completed by QTAC) • Inter-subject scaling is where raw scores are adjusted so the results for that subject can be compared fairly with the results of any other subject. Even though passing ENGLISH is necessary, it doesn’t necessarily get used for ATAR calculation

25 Specific pathways for ATAR eligibilty
ATAR ELIGIBLE PATHWAYS at EPSHS 6 general 5 general 4 general + 1 applied 1 internal Cert III 2 applied BE CAREFUL when selecting subjects, as any of these pathways will make you ATAR eligible, REGARDLESS of whether you want to be or not.

26 Specific pathways for ATAR eligibility
ATAR INELIGIBLE PATHWAYS at EPSHS Combination of 6 subjects Combination of 5 subjects Combination of 4 subjects IPP (max of 3 general) + 1 internal/ external Cert III 2 internal / external Cert III If you have NO DESIRE to go to University, then it is RECOMMENDED you choose of one these pathways to best set you up for a successful career after Year 12.

27 ATAR eligibility & University

29 Subject selection VET Pathways

30 SETPLAN & Subject Selection

31 OFFICIAL Subject Selection
& SETPLAN day is 28 August

32 Subject selection Each student and their parent will attend a meeting with an experienced staff member to: Confirm student’s appropriate learning pathway Confirm student’s subjects that will give them best opportunity at success towards achieving that pathway

33 Preliminary selections
Preliminary student subject selections have been used to : Put subjects on lines that have the least clashes Enable relevant staff members to make recommendations regarding the “appropriateness” of student subject selections

34 Appropriate pathways In the past, schools have generally given students benefit of doubt and let them attempt subjects that they probably couldn’t succeed in due to “giving them a chance”.

35 STUDENTS MUST BE IN THE APPROPRIATE SUBJECT
Appropriate pathways Due to: school having to report to QCAA immediately after Units 1 & 2 Students achieving 12 completed core QCE points STUDENTS MUST BE IN THE APPROPRIATE SUBJECT from Day 1, Year 11

36 Appropriate pathways Already, some students have been preliminarily identified as picking “INAPPROPRIATE” subjects. Conversations with these students mean they have the rest of this year to demonstrate they have the discipline to succeed in these subjects.

37 Appropriate pathways - UNI
If you have aspirations for University, please check what pre-requisite subjects are required for the degree you hope to get into.

38 Appropriate pathways - Trade
If you have aspirations for a Trade, please check what IPP options or external Cert III options exist for you.

39 Getting your QCE IN a NUTSHELL:
Pick realistic subjects that your child can succeed in and will enjoy, if your child is willing to put in the work. Please CONSIDER any school and teacher recommendations that may be made for your child. Get your assessment in ON TIME!!!

40 Getting your QCE Good luck with your selections and we look forward to having two successful senior years with you at Everton Park SHS.
