India @ 1.2 billion: Putting things in perspective India = middle income country 269 million people live below the poverty line (21.8% of total pop) 448 million children (37% of total population) 2.2 million births per month Let us start by looking at the current environment, the status of children in India and the operating environment with the Government of India and other partners. [click] India is home to 1.2 billion people, with close of 450 million children. The country has an average of 2.2 million new births per month. [click] It is touted as the world’s largest democracy, but 269 million or nearly 22% (21.8%) of its people (including children) still live below the poverty line. This is despite the country witnessing a rapid growth over the last decade or more. However from an annual growth of 9% + in 2005-2009, it has now slowed down (almost halved) and now stands 5%. But then, as LG already mentioned, its shockingly unequal patterns of development, say Drèze and Sen, are “making the country look more and more like islands of California in a sea of sub-Saharan Africa”. [click] India has a low middle income status based on a current GP per capita of USD 1,489 (compared to other MICs - Thailand with 5,480 and Brazil with 11,340! – source World Bank 2008-2012). But there are large pockets in the country that can compare with least developed countries of the world.

Of every 100 children born in India: 4 will die before their first birthday And 5 before their 5th birthday 38 will be stunted 36 will not be fully immunised 49 will live without adequate sanitation What does this mean for a child born in India? In terms of numbers: 1.16 million die before their first birthday 61.4 million children are stunted in the country Of these 8 million suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition 55 million are underweight And to address all these and more challenges in the life of a child ,India committed to Call To Action …. UNICEF’s geographical focus: 2013-2017 Country Programme Rajasthan Jammu & Kashmir Uttar Pradesh West Bengal Delhi Haryana Punjab Bihar Tamil Nadu Kerala Karnataka Maharashtra Assam Gujarat Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh Odisha Jharkhand Andhra Pradesh Lucknow Patna Bhubaneshwar Chennai Hyderabad Guwahati Bhopal Ranchi Kolkata Raipur Mumbai Gandhinagar Jaipur UNICEF’s geographical focus: 2013-2017 Country Programme Script: The geographical scope of our country programme will cover three typologies of states: states with full programming , states with selected programing and states with selected programming where we do not have a physical presence This is in recognition of the fact that to be relevant and effective; keeping in mind our resource envelope; and taking into consideration the diversity of state contexts in terms capacities and indicators - our programing content and strategies needs to differentiated and adaptive to suit these diverse contexts. Note: UNICEF will also support selected programming in the UNDAF states in the North East

Remember! Linkages between child health, nutrition and water & sanitation Stark disparities in India Global footprint of India (SDGs)
