Genital Herpes- incurable STD that produces blisters. Blisters can occur in several areas of the body, depending on the site of sexual contact: On or around the penis In or around the vagina In the mouth or on the lips On the thighs or abdomen Around or in the anus

HPV – group of 100 related viruses, the effects which include genital warts and cervical cancer. Many sexually active people have the virus, but most never know it. Only 10% show symptoms or warts. Females may discover the infection with a routine PAP test, a test for cancer of the cervix. HPV vaccine for females ages 9 – 26 Gardasil – series of three shots over a six month period. http://www.gardasil.com/

Syphilis – chancre, flu like symptoms, symptomless, brain and nerve damage, death. Stages of Syphilis: 1. Chancre – hard painful sore 2. Swollen glands, a skin rash, patchy hair loss or flu-like symptoms 3. Latent stage – 10 to 20 years. Can still transmit diseases during this symptomless period. 4. Destroys organs – blindness, deafness, brain/skin/heart damage. Pregnant females – syphilis enters the bloodstream and can effect the fetus.

Preventing Sexually Transmitted Diseases Section 3

Eliminating the RISK of STD’s. Abstinence – refraining completing from sexual relations with other people. Monogamous Relationship – having sexual relations with 1 partner only.

Reducing the RISK of STD’s Avoiding contact with the partners semen or vaginal fluids. Using latex condoms throughout every sexual act to keep body fluids from being exchanged. Refusing alcohol and other drugs. Avoiding high risk behaviors, and avoiding relations with others who engage in high risk behaviors such as drugs, alcohol and unprotected sex.
