Disaster Preparedness Plans A disaster can strike without warning. It could be a natural or man-made disaster from fire, flood, earthquake, or severe storm to an airplane crash, chemical spill, pipeline leak and explosion, or downed power line. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or it can confine you to your home. These tips and suggestions can help your family prepare so that if, and when, disaster strikes you are as ready as possible.

Command Preparations The CDO will establish a command element in the Admin Office which will be the central muster point. All BARRY Sailors will call their Chief to muster. The Chief will then forward a report to the CDO regarding the Sailors they've heard from and their situation.

The Ombudsman will report to the command element on the ship regarding the Sailors they've heard from and their situation. If BARRY is out to sea & you cannot reach the Ombudsman, call the Fleet and Family Service Center 24-Hour Line at 444-NAVY or 1-800-FSC-LINE they will provide further information and assistance.

Evacuate to the location in which local officials or the Red Cross has instructed you.

Crew and Family Members Let the Ombudsman know where you are evacuating from, where you are now, who is with you, who is missing, what you are planning to do next & how the Ombudsman can get back in touch with you. If you cannot reach the Ombudsman, please leave a message on her phone. If BARRY is in port you should check in with your Chief who will report your status to the Command Element.

Crew and Family Members Stay calm and check in every 4 hours with the Ombudsman for an update. Also, make sure you update her on your situation. Start maintaining a list of needs for the time you are displaced. If BARRY is out to sea & you cannot reach the Ombudsman, call the Fleet and Family Service Center in Hampton Roads 24-Hours 444-NAVY or 1-800-FSC-LINE they will provide further information and assistance.

FOR SAILORS AND/OR FAMILIES WHO ARE AWAY FROM THE AREA IN A DISASTER SITUATION Ensure your Sailors and their families have a safe evacuation point. Sailors should call their chief. The Chief will keep in touch with them and advise on available resources and point of contact information for their area. Ensure family members know to call the command Ombudsman. The Ombudsman will keep in touch with them and advise on available resources and command information.

FOR SAILORS AND/OR FAMILIES WHO ARE AWAY FROM THE COMMAND If a disaster occurs in the Hampton Roads area, and you are out of the area on leave or TAD. Contact the command as soon as possible and report your status and location. You will be given direction at that time if you should return to the command. If your family members are still in the Hampton Roads area, ensure they know to call the command Ombudsman. The Ombudsman will keep in touch with them and advise on available resources and command information.

Emergencies or Incidents on BARRY underway The primary source of information for families and friends is the Ombudsman. Do not panic if you don’t hear from your sailor. The ship normally restricts phones and email during and following incidents to prevent mis-information. The Command leadership will contact the ombudsman with official information and updates.

Emergencies or Incidents on BARRY underway The command will make every effort to notify families of the status of their loved ones’ during a crisis or emergency. We will do this thru the Ombudsman. This notification may be a simple “all crewmembers are safe” message. Additional POC for assistance and information is the American Red Cross at 1 (877) 272-7337.

Emergencies or Incidents on BARRY underway Family Members should be discouraged from talking to the press regarding incidents onboard. All requests for comment should be referred to the PAO.

Preparation Basics Hold a family meeting to discuss why the family needs to prepare for disaster. Explain the dangers of fire, severe weather, earthquakes, and other emergencies to a child using understandable terms. Explain that establishing a plan makes it more likely that the family will stay together in an emergency.
