What is a Citation? A citation gives credit to the person who had the original thought, idea or words. The citation gives credit if the material is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized from published work (book, article, video) or unpublished (interview).

Types of Citation – Direct Quote In-Text Citation – Direct Quote Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. According to Siebold 2000, MLK was one of, “America’s most charismatic figures.” (12) Quotation marks are used to show you are using the original words. When you are quoting in-text, you need to state who the quote is from (author or website). And the year it was published. Then add the words you are quoting. Then the page number of where the source is cited.

Types of Citation – Paraphrase In-Text Citation – Paraphrasing Paraphrase is the idea from the source, but written in your own words. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. MLK was a compelling and captivating person.(Siebold 2000) When you are paraphrasing in-text, you need to state who the original quote or idea is from (author or website). Then add the paraphrase in your own words.

Paraphrase Practice Paraphrasing Paraphrase is the idea from the source, but written in your own words. Martin Luther King Jr. gained much of his strength to withstand adversity from the love and support of his family. (Siebold 2000) How can we paraphrase this statement?
