Voter Registration Guide SEIU Local 1000 Voter Registration Guide

Who is eligible to register to vote? A citizen of the United States A resident of California 18 years old on or before the next election day You may register while you are 17, provided you will be 18 on or before election day. Not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction

Who should complete a voter registration card? Anyone who has never registered to vote Has changed their place of residence since last registering Wishes to change their political party affiliation Has changed their name since last registering

How to use a voter registration card Boxes 1-2 Print the voter’s legal name Boxes 4-5 Voter’s address and city where the voter resides. NO P.O. Boxes Box 3 Have them check off appropriate box

Give exact description of where the voter lives. Box 6 If no street address Give exact description of where the voter lives. Include cross streets, bridges, route or other landmarks. The voter must have a mailing address in order to receive voting materials.

Fill out mailing address if the voter wishes to receive their Box 7-8 Mailing Address Fill out mailing address if the voter wishes to receive their election mail at a different address than where they live. Box 9-10 Date and Place of Birth Date of birth. List the name of the state in the United States or the name of the foreign country if born outside the United States.

California Driver’s License or CA ID Card # Box 11 California Driver’s License or CA ID Card # If the voter registering has been issued a California Drivers License or a Identification Card, they MUST list the number. If the voter does not have either, they MUST list the last 4 digits of their Social Security Number. Box 12-13 Telephone number and Email Optional The telephone number and email address are optional, but helps the election office to contact the voter if there is any problem with your registration.

The voter registering may choose to Box 14 Political Party The voter registering may choose to mark a party listed, however, they DO NOT have to choose any of the parties listed. If the voter wishes to NOT to be affiliated with a party, check the box marked “NO”. If “Other” is marked, the voter fills in the name of the party desired. YOU CANNOT TELL PEOPLE WHAT PARTY TO REGISTER FOR!! VOTER REGISTERATION IS NON-PARTISAN! NOTE: There can be only ONE mark in Box 14 with NO CORRECTIONS or ALTERATIONS. A new card must be filled out if an error is made.

The voter may request to be a vote by mail voter if so, the voter BOX 15 Vote By Mail Voter The voter may request to be a vote by mail voter if so, the voter MUST place initials on the line provided. Box 16 Prior Registration MUST be completed if the voter has been previously registered. If the voter doesn’t remember the complete address, please complete as much as the voter remembers. Box 17 Citizenship Check the box if the voter is a United States Citizen or will be 18 years old on or before election day.

Signature of voter registering This box MUST contain the signature of the voter. Please include the date of signing. You must sign this to say that you are turning in their voter registration form for them.

The bottom portion of voter registration cards The portion below the perforation line is to be given to the voter. The person assisting with the registration card or the person keeping the voter registration card to mail in for the voter, must compete the area on either of the voter registration cards with this required information.

What to do with completed voter registration cards! Completed Voter Registration Cards may be: Delivered to the local election office Delivered to the Secretary of State’s office Mailed- Voter Registration Cards are postage paid DO NOT HOLD ON TO COMPLETED CARDS Deliver or mail them to the Registrar of Voters within 3 days of receiving them, or the close of registration, whichever comes first. To be eligible to vote in an election the registration card must be delivered to the Elections Office on or before the 15-day close or registration.

Absentee ballot If they are re-registering or newly registered they can initial Box 15 It they are already registered they can fill out an application and check to be permanent absentee voter. You may also write a letter to request absentee status.

Additional information Ask people to use BLACK or DARK BLUE ink when completing a card. DO NOT – Register fictitious person Register nonexistent person Alter party affiliation Take or give out personal information put on the registration card.
