Alternative Certification How to move from a temporary certificate to a professional certificate in Santa Rosa County School District

Pathways to Move from a Temporary to a Professional Certificate How did you get here? Bachelor’s Degree in something other than education and passed a Subject Area Exam Bachelor’s Degree with a Major in the Content Area Bachelor’s Degree with a Valid Certificate Issued by ABCTE Bachelor’s Degree with Required Courses and a 2.5 GPA in the content Area

What’s next on the pathway? What do I do now? Pass all parts of the General Knowledge Exam – should occur during 1st year This includes 4 parts: Essay – 1 Written English Language Skills – 40 questions Reading – 40 questions Mathematics – 45 questions Pass the Florida Professional Education Test – Three Years to Complete * It is possible to continue to teach if you don’t pass the GK your first year but this requires additional mentoring for one year. The Professional Education Test may also be waived if you receive a Highly Effective evaluation during the year prior to applying for your professional certificate.

GOOD NEWS!! Moving Along….. HR will enroll you in the Florida Professional Development Certification Program Assigned a district level Mentor/Coach Requires online courses and additional observations with on-site peer educators and administrators. Requires weekly participation in various mentoring activities GOOD NEWS!! This program is FREE as opposed to the many other options that are available AND your mentor/coach is a Santa Rosa County teacher!

Alternative Certification Quick Reference Testing General Knowledge Exam – 1st Year Professional Educator Exam – 3 Years Subject Area Exam Possible Mentoring and Observations Assigned District level Mentor/Coach – Weekly Mentoring Activities – 1st Year Assigned School Level mentors for additional observations Course Work Enrolled in Florida’s Professional Development Certification Program – Complete during 2nd year Complete three Beacon Courses – ELL, SWD, and Reading SWD: ESE for All Educators (SWD - SB 1108) – enroll for NO charge at the MODULES for Educators Subscription page. ESOL: Curriculum & Materials - register for NO charge at the ESOL Endorsement courses page. Reading 1 and 2 May be required. This may not occur until year 3 depending on your teaching assignment Work with District Mentor to Complete Courses https://www.altcertflorida.org
