2 Am I Highly Qualified? Everyone teaching core academic subjects for No Child Left Behind (NCLB) must be Highly Qualified by June 30, 2006. Use the questions in this presentation to assist you in determining if you meet the requirements for NCLB and, if HOUSSE is a viable option. Click your mouse to begin…

3 Basic NCLB Terminology The Florida High, Objective, Uniform State Standard of Evaluation (HOUSSE) plan is an option, other than certification or testing, that experienced teachers can use to document subject content competency and knowledge in core subjects they are assigned to teach. A total of 100 points is required. Documentation must be attached for each dimension in which points are achieved. Note: The HOUSSE option cannot be used for the core subject area of Reading. Completed and approved HOUSSE plan forms should be sent to Dianne Gordon in Instructional Staffing. The principal’s signature acts as approval. A verification letter will be sent upon receipt of the HOUSSE plan form and information will be documented in SAP.

4 Basic NCLB Terminology (Continued) There are three separate HOUSSE plan forms for lead teachers of record teaching core academic subjects. Please refer to the descriptions of each form below to determine which form is appropriate. Teachers of Academic Core Content Courses All regular education teachers of core academic subjects at the elementary and middle/secondary level. ESE Teachers of Core Academic Elementary Education ESE teachers of core academic subjects at the elementary level. ESE Teachers of Core Academic Middle/Secondary Education ESE teachers of core academic subjects at the middle/secondary level. Click on the title a form for a direct link.

5 Basic NCLB Terminology (Continued) An Experienced Teacher is defined as one who has taught full-time instructional for 196 days. The Core Subjects for NCLB are: Elementary English/Language Arts Reading Journalism Math Arts (Music, Drama, Art) Science Foreign Languages Social Science (Civics, Economics, Geography, Government, History) A Teacher of Record is indicated if the teacher’s name appears on the students’ schedule. Please note that NCLB Highly Qualified requirements do not pertain to teachers who are not the teacher of record.

13 For the teacher with less than one year of experience who is teaching courses that begin with 77, 78, or 79: Have you provided a copy of a passing Elementary Education subject area exam score or an ABCTE Passport to Teaching Certificate and is it appropriate for the level of instruction being provided? Please note that the Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum subject area exam may be an option here as it covers English, math, science, and social science. Reference the Course Code Directory to ensure this exam will be appropriate.
