Animal Facts Diet Description Movement Lions are muscular cats with short rounded heads, round ears and a hairy tuft at the end  of their tails. The colors of a lion are light tan to silvery grey, yellowish red and dark brown. Males are typically 350-550 pounds, while females are 265 – 400 pounds. Diet Lions are carnivores that mostly eat mammals.  Their favorites are zebras, warthogs,  wildebeests, and gazelles. Movement Lions walk and run on their paws. Lions can only run fast for a short period of time. Life Cycle After a gestation period of around 110 days the female lion give birth to a litter of usually 1 to 4 cubs. Lion cubs are born blind and can't see until about 7 days after they are born.  Cubs usually weigh between 2.6 - 4.6 pounds at birth. Animal Interactions Lions protect themselves with their large size, sharp teeth and sharp claws.  They also live in groups called "prides" which gives them protection in number.  Lions use different calls when communicating with each other.  They have roars, meows, growls, snarls, and purrs, each of which has a different meaning.
