Subnational Actions for the Regeneration of Landscapes Assessment of potential for transformational change

Basic Information Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) in Mexico Pilot and early action activities in 6 states with projection of 12 states 1 million hectares of grazing lands and 240,000 hectares of forests (projected) Coordinated by Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, I.A.P. (GESG) Initiated with State of Querétaro, which is promoting replication

Components of the NAMA State funding mechanisms Subnational actions for regeneration of forests Subnational actions for planned grazing Orientation of public policies and programs Awareness campaigns

ICAT Guidance Documents Applied Introductory Guide Agriculture Guidance Forest Guidance Transformational Change Guidance Non-State and Subnational Action Guidance Technical Review Guidance

Assessment Reports Assessment of GHG impacts of subnational actions for the implementation of planned grazing Assessment of GHG impacts of subnational actions for the regeneration of forests Assessment of potential for transformational change

GHG Impacts and NDC Goals Regenerative Planned Grazing Net GHG impact: -2.9 MtCO2e/year in 2030 from 12 subnational actions 52% of the theoretic potential for planned grazing identified by National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change 41% of the unconditional goal for agricultural sector of -7 MtCO2e in 2030 (source of goal: INECC 2017)

GHG Impacts and NDC Goals Forest Regeneration Net GHG impact: -694,000 tCO2e/year in 2030 from 12 subnational actions 5% of emissions goal of -14 MtCO2e for 2030 (source of goal: INECC 2017) Reorientation of system of government programs, technical support, incentives and financial mechanisms is expected to result in greater impacts.

Sustainable Development Evaluation of Social Return on Investment (SROI) Estimate of 53% increase in income of participating ranches (with 28% increase in costs) Value of environmental returns in subsector of livestock grazing: 939 million pesos per year Estimate of economic and environmental returns in forest sector: 408 million pesos per year

Transformational impact matrix Text Transformational impact matrix

Policy Design Improvements Specific objective for the regenerative reorientation of the system of government programs, technical support, incentives and finance mechanisms for the target sectors Formation of a critical mass of public officials decision makers, NGOs, educators, technicians and producers committed to regenerative management Incorporation of a public awareness campaign in key cities Integrated landscape management orientation for the NAMA with greater emphasis on intersectoral coordination and the clustering of interventions geographically in high-priority landscapes
