Presentation transcript:

Characteristics of life Objectives: Identify the characteristics of life Differ between living and non-living Define the basic life functions of an organism

DO NOW: Living or Non-living? Why?

Characteristics of Living Things Composed of cells Use Energy Growth- development Respond to change in environment Reproduce Maintain Homeostasis

What do ALL living things need to survive? Water Plants and animals can’t survive without it. Used for transport materials through living things Needed to carry out chemical changes Energy All energy comes from the sun. All organisms need energy Living space Includes air, water, sunlight, food, and shelter Organisms need living space to survive Organisms compete for living space

Every living organism needs to perform certain functions to stay alive Life Functions Every living organism needs to perform certain functions to stay alive This is called Homeostasis

MR STRaNGER M – Metabolism R - Respiration S – Synthesis T – Transport R – Regulation a N – Nutrition G – Growth and repair E – Excretion R - Reproduction

Respiration The process by which oxygen is combined with nutrients to supply energy. Aerobic Respiration – Organisms that use oxygen to release energy from nutrients Anaerobic Respiration – Organisms that do not use oxygen (Bacteria, fungus) Respiration is NOT BREATHING! Breathing is the mechanical movement of air in and out.

Do Now What are the 6 characteristics of living things? What do all living things need to survive? What does the acronym MR STRaNGER stand for?

Synthesis Build molecules needed for chemical reactions.

Transportation The process of movement. Including movement of materials Inside the organism. Ex. Our circulatory system transports blood and nutrients throughout our body.

Regulation Keeping levels constant within the organism, maintaining the right amounts. Ex: Sweat when too hot, shiver when too cold.

Nutrition The taking in of nutrients (ingestion) And breaking them down (digestion) for energy Autotrophs and Heterotrophs

Autotrophs / Heterotrophs Autotrophs – organisms that can make their own food. Ex. Plants Heterotrophs – Organisms that get food from other organisms. Ex. Animals

The ability to increase in size and heal. Growth and Repair The ability to increase in size and heal.

Excretion The process by which waste products produced by an organism are removed or eliminated.

The process by which organisms generate others of the same kind. Reproduction The process by which organisms generate others of the same kind. Reproduction is not necessary for each organism, but is needed for the continuation and survival of the species.

The sum of all life functions = METABOLISM Metabolism – all the chemical activities an organism must carry on to sustain life.

Practice Questions _____ is the life function that involves releasing energy from food using oxygen. a. reproduction b. respiration c. nutrition d. transport Which life function is not necessary for the survival of the individual? a. excretion b. response to stimuli c. reproduction d. growth The sum of all life functions is ______? a. respiration b. synthesis c. Regulation d. metabolism

What are the life functions every organism needs to perform. ____________________________________
