1 Living Things

2 Vocabulary Autotroph (Producer) – Organism that makes its own food by using the Sun’s energy through photosynthesis Cells – basic building blocks of living things Competition – when organisms fight over limited (not enough) resources (food, water and oxygen) Heterotroph (Consumer) – can not make their own food, they must eat for energy

3 Vocabulary Homeostasis (Regulation) – maintaining a stable internal environment and temperature Metabolism – all the chemical reactions (building and breaking down) that occur in an organism Locomotion- the movement of an organism

4 Vocabulary Reproduction – producing offspring (new individuals)
Response – a reaction to a stimulus Stimulus – a change in the environment that causes a response

5 Characteristics of Living Things
1. Made of Cells _______________ - organisms that are made up of only one cell ex. Bacteria and Protists _________________ - organisms that are made up of more than one cell Usually can be seen with the naked eye. ex. Plants and Animals Unicellular Multicellular

6 Check what you know Multicellular Multicellular Unicellular

7 Characteristics of Living Things
2. Locomotion Can ________ move

8 Characteristics of Living Things
3. Metabolism All chemical reactions that occur in an organism Ingestion – taking ____ food (eating) Digestion - ________________ food into useable nutrients in breakdown

9 Characteristics of Living Things
Respiration – nutrients (food) combine with ___________ to produce energy and carbon dioxide Excretion – getting rid of ___________ (solid, liquid, or gas CO2) oxygen wastes

10 Characteristics of Living Things
4. Growth & Development Growth: when a _____ gets ________ and/or ____________ in _________ Development: is the process in which an organism transforms itself from a _________ to a ____________ organism (tadpole frog) cell larger increases number simple complex

11 Characteristics of Living Things
Multicellular organisms _________ for growth and repair

12 Characteristics of Living Things
5. Respond to the Environment Stimulus – a ___________ in the environment that causes a response Ex. Cold Response – a ____________ to a stimulus Ex. shiver change reaction

13 Check what you know: Cold temperature Shivering Heat from stove
Moving hand away from stove Stimulus Response

14 Characteristics of Living Things
6. Reproduce To produce new _______________________________ Needed for survival of a __________, or it will become____________. individuals (offspring) species extinct Asexual Reproduction Requires ______ parent Offspring are physically and genetically ____________ to the parent one identical

15 Characteristics of Living Things
Examples: Unicellular organisms dividing (Mitosis) Plant Clippings Regeneration Budding Cloning

16 Characteristics of Living Things
Sexual Reproduction Requires _______ parents Offspring are ______ physically and genetically (DNA) identical to the parent They have a _____________ of traits (____________________) Examples: Joining of a sperm (_________) and an egg (__________) cell - fertilization Joining of pollen (_________) and an egg cell two not variety characteristics male female male

17 Which of the 6 Characteristics Can an Organism Not Perform and Still be Considered Living?
Reproduction

18 Needs of Living Things 1. Energy
All organisms obtain (get) energy from ________. Depending on how you get food, you can be: 1._______________ (Producer) Make energy through ________________________. Plants and some bacteria FOOD Autotroph Photosynthesis

19 Needs of Living Things Carnivores: eat ________
2.________________ (Consumer) Carnivores: eat ________ Herbivores: eat ________ ____________: eat plants and animals Heterotroph meat plants Omnivore

20 Check what you know Heterotroph Autotroph

21 Needs of Living Things It helps organisms to: 2. Water Reproduce
Break down food Grow ________________ substances within their bodies Reproduce Transport

22 Needs of Living Things 3. Living Space It provides organisms with:
A _________ where they can get _____________ (food, water, oxygen). Organisms often ____________ for space. _________________: when organisms _______ over limited (________________) resources causing those with the best traits to ___________ place resources compete Competition fight

23 Needs of Living Things 4. Maintain Homeostasis (Regulation)
• It allows organisms to: maintain ________ conditions internally (inside the body) Control temperature Control the amount of water maintain cell functions stable

24 6th Grade Review Material: Energy Transformation
Energy moving from one object to another Heat from the Sun is transferred/absorbed by a pool causing the water to evaporate After swimming your bathing suit absorbs heat from the Sun causing the water to evaporate and your suit to dry The Sun's heat is received by the Earth by radiation (heat transferred through empty space)
