1991 FIAF Rules: “. immediate purpose 1991 FIAF Rules: “. . . immediate purpose . . . facilitating the exchange of information between and among archives, so that cataloging records, created in one archive, may be readily interpreted and understood in another.” EN 15907: “. . . specifies a set of metadata for the description of cinematographic works, as well as a terminology . . . to exchange such descriptive metadata.” From the start the FIAF Rules were designed to facilitate the exchange of information between archives. This is a primary goal of the CEN CWS as well.

Consistent terminology outlined in a glossary. The vision of the project One of the most farsighted rules adopted by FIAF concerns using original title in country of origin and original production information on records for all subsequent manifestations of a work; this is in fact in line with current FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) design, which is also incorporated into RDA (Resource Description and Access)—the new data content standard set to be implemented in the US in March 2013. Represent a corpus of contextualized suggestions, rather than a set of authoritative directions, so that they will easily integrate with institutions’ existing procedures. Web-accessible Consistent terminology outlined in a glossary. Be compatible with existing metadata and data communication structures such as Dublin Core, MARC, and the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) Metadata Specifications for Cinematographic Works. Adopt a FRBR-based conceptual model and align closely with the CEN Metadata Specifications for Cinematographic Works. Created a Working Group, open to anyone interested in participating (about 30 members including many experts from film archives) Studied compatibility with relevant metadata structures): i.e. MARC, Dublin Core, CEN Metadata Specifications for Cinematographic Works. Compatibility Not RDA compliant but we do pull from it so it has shaped our conceptual approach to cataloguing. We do a disservice to moving images if we follow these book-/publication-oriented models. Where we diverge greatly, our rules need to make this explicit. More compliant with CEN. Agreement with RDA conceptually but more responsive to cinematographic material I.e., RDA adopts the FRBR conceptual model, as do we, but its rules are intended for the whole of the bibliographic universe Compatible with EN15907 but with some differences as a result of practical application E.g., EN15907 treatment of physical description at the manifestation level is better suited at the item level in real-world cataloguing and archival workflow. Such differences can easily be mapped when it comes to data exchange/interoperability. Retention of 1991 FIAF Rules concept of a “work” Provision of examples showing creation of records within various data structures (flat-file, relational) Use of “optional” approaches/rules that account for system constraints, and differences in institutional factors and approaches to cataloguing
