1 Update on RDA & cataloguing standards developments Deirdre Kiorgaard Australian Committee on Cataloguing Representative to the Joint Steering Committee for the Development of RDA Cataloguing and Metadata Futures @ Libraries Australia Forum 6 November 2009

2 Standards update  MARC – upcoming proposals http://www.loc.gov/marc/development.html  Non-Roman script data in authority records http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/nonlatingeneral.html  DDC – current proposals http://www.nla.gov.au/lis/stndrds/grps/acoc/EPCexhibits.html  LCSH – Genre/Form project http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/genreformgeneral.html  IFLA names of persons

3 What RDA is  A new standard to replace AACR  Designed for the digital world –Instructions will be a Web tool –Instructions cover description of digital resources –Resulting records to be used in web environment  Broader scope –Includes ‘authorities’  Better coverage of resource types –Online resources, visual resources

4 What RDA isn’t  Not a replacement for MARC21 or the ILMS –Not an encoding standard or library system  Not a panacea for every ill afflicting the catalogue, but … –It will enable improved navigation of the catalogue and improved catalogue displays (more organised, less cluttered)  Not (necessarily) simplified cataloguing, but.. –It will offer the potential of improved efficiency of data creation & maintenance
