Geometry: Three Dimensional Solids

What is a Three Dimensional Solid? Sometimes called Space figures Figures whose points do not all lie in the same plane. They are not flat like polygons

3 dimensions It is called three-dimensional, or 3D because there are three dimensions: width, depth and height

Parts of a 3D Solid Edge: A line segment where two faces of a solid meet

Parts of a 3D Solid Face: Flat surface of a solid, you can slap it

Parts of a 3D Solid Vertex: A point where two or more edges meet the “pointy” part

Solids

What is a net? When you take a solid apart and lay it down flat you get a NET! Can you guess which net makes up which solid?

Cube

Net for a Cube

Sphere

Cone

Cylinder

Net for a Cylinder

Pyramid ***Has a square on the bottom face, not a triangle***

Net for a Pyramid

Tetrahedron or Triangular Pyramid Has a triangle at the base, not a square

Net for a Tetrahedron

Prism Has the same shape on both the top and the bottom Looks like it has been stretched out

Nets for Prisms

Now let’s practice!

Which solid is this? How many faces does it have? How many vertices does it have? How many edges does it have?

Which solid is this? How many faces does it have? How many vertices does it have? How many edges does it have?

3D Solids are EVERYWHERE Try to find the all the solids in the following pictures
