Le pronom y replaces the name of a place, a thing, or an idea.

This pronoun replaces a place preceded by a preposition & means there: Prepositions: dans sur sous devant chez derrière en à au aux à l –On va au Jardin de Plantes? –Non, on ny va pas aujourdhui. –On peut y aller demain, si tu veux.

Y can also replace à + a thing or idea & translates as it/them or about it/about them: Va-t-elle répondre à tous ses mails? –Is she going to answer all her s? Oui, elle va y répondre tôt ou tard. –Yes, shes going to answer them, sooner or later.

In the passé composé, there is no agreement with y. It goes in front of the helping verb: As-tu pensé aux grandes vacances? –Have you thought about summer vacation? Non, je ny ai pas encore pensé. Et toi? –No, I havent even thought about it yet. Have you?

When y is used with the imperative, the final –s of –er verbs and aller is added before the pronoun: Tu dois penser à ton voyage. You need to think about your trip. –Penses-y! Think about it!
