2. In addition to ne…pas, there are other negative expressions.

3. ne…aucun(e) = none (not any) Les élèves n’ont aucune question. The students don’t have any questions. Il n’y avait aucun distributeur de billets dans le village. There was no ATM in the village. Aucun(e) is always followed by a singular noun.

4. ne…jamais = never Mon copain n’arrive jamais à l’heure. My friend never arrives on time. When used in the passé composé, jamais comes before the past participle. Je n’ai jamais reçu la lettre. I never received the letter. Elle n’y est jamais allée. She never went there.

5. ne…ni…ni… = neither…nor Je ne veux ni le poulet ni le poisson. I want neither the chicken nor the fish. Mon père n’est ni grand ni petit. My father is neither tall nor short.

6. ne…personne = nobody, no one, not anybody Est-ce que tu vois quelqu’un dans la maison? -Non, je ne vois personne. Do you see anyone in the house? –No, I don’t see anybody.

7. ne…plus = not anymore Ils n’habitent plus en France. They don’t live in France anymore. Like jamais, plus comes before the past participle in the passé composé. Elle ne m’a plus téléphoné. She didn’t call me anymore.

8. ne…que = only La boutique ne vend que des vêtements. The shop only sells clothes.

9. ne…rien = nothing, not anything Qu’est-ce que tu fais? - Je ne fais rien. What are you doing? - I’m not doing anything. Like jamais and plus, rien comes before the past participle in the passé composé. Les enfants n’ont rien fait à l’école aujourd’hui. The children didn’t do anything at school today.

10. Personne and rien can be the subject of a verb, in which case they are placed before the verb. Personne ne parle une autre langue chez nous. Nobody speaks another language at our house. Rien n’était dans le sac. Nothing was in the bag.
