Les prépositions d’emplacement (Prepositions of Location)
Les livres sont sur la table.
The books are on the table.
J’habite près de l’école.
I live near the school.

3. Use the preposition à before the name of a city.
Je suis à Paris. I’m in Paris.
Mes cousins habitent à Montréal. My cousins live in Montreal.

4. Use the preposition en with countries that are grammatically feminine.
Nous sommes en France. We’re in France.
Elle voyage en Belgique. She’s travelling to Belgium.

5. Use au with grammatically masculine countries. Au is a contraction of
à + le. If the country has a plural name, use aux. Aux is a contraction
of à + les.
Vous êtes au Canada. You are in Canada.
J’habite aux États-Unis. I live in the United States.

6. Use the contractions du (de+le=du) and des (de+les=des) in
prepositional expressions when appropriate.
L’hôpital est à côté du parc. The hospital is next to the park.
La calculatrice est à gauche des livres. The calculator is to the left of the books.

7. You can modify prepositions of locations using intensifiers like
tout (very, really) and juste (just, right).
Je suis juste derrière toi. I’m right behind you.
Ma maison est tout près de ta maison. My house is very close to your house.

8. Leave off de when there is no noun following the preposition.
Elle habite juste à côté. She lives right next door.
San Francisco est loin. San Francisco is far away.

9. The preposition chez means to or at the house or place of business of someone. It has no English equivalent.
Mes parents sont chez les voisins. My parents are at the neighbors’ house.
J’étudie chez Marie. I’m studying at Marie’s house.
Ma mère est chez la coiffeuse. My mother is at the hairdresser’s.

10. Les pronoms accentués (Disjunctive Pronouns)
Use disjunctive pronouns after prepositions instead of subject pronouns.

11. Tu es devant lui. You’re in front of him.
Nous sommes en face d’eux. We’re facing them.
Nous regardons le match chez moi. We’re watching the game at my house.
