Industrial Revolution: Living Conditions

Put these statements in the correct order and write them down More food needed. Houses built in the cities are cheap and bad quality. Farm workers lose their jobs. Population grows. There are not enough houses in the cities. Machines get better on farms to make more food. People on the farms move to the cities to find jobs. D, A, F, C, G, E, B

The place stank, people are living in homes with one cramped bedroom I saw home to 40 people! I mean, when I came here it was just awful. Black smoke stops the light from shining here and everyone is always coughing. Health here is not good and diseases spread quickly. Germs are everywhere. One place I went I saw more than 50 people sharing one toilet. People sell their own waste as manure to farmers and the streets are filthy. But people still are arriving here every day and it’s really sad. Above all of this, no one I’ve met even seems to care… Think, Pair, Share After reading the passage aloud answer the following: - Where am I? How do you know this? - What year is it? What tells you this? - What caused people to live like this? Give examples. - Would you live here? Explain.

You need to get into pairs. One of you will describe, one will draw. Back to Back Houses You need to get into pairs. One of you will describe, one will draw. You need to try and draw the cross-section of house, using the description from your partner. No cheating!
