The Industrial Revolution Open textbook to pg. 496!

The Industrial Revolution Lasted from approximately 1750-1850 (It began BEFORE World War One! How do you think all those weapons were made for the war?) Began in Great Britain but then spread to other countries Industrial means having to do with factories and manufacturing.

How were things made before the Industrial Revolution? Most people lived on small farms and made everything by hand. (Ex: clothing, tools, and food) This was called the ‘cottage industry’ because everything was made in the home. People often sold anything extra they made at their local markets. Benefits of working for yourself = choosing your own hours, working sunrise to sunset, working at your own pace!

Why did the Industrial Revolution Begin? 1.Improved farming methods: it took less people to operate a farm! Jobless farmers moved to cities to work in factories. 2. Rich landowners starting taking small farms and combining them into larger more efficient farms - again needing fewer workers! 3. New technology helped business owners change the way work was done!

New Technology steam power coal mining iron (and steel) railroads  Steam Locomotive boats  Steam boats

How did life for people change during the Industrial Revolution? Urbanization  People started moving to where jobs in factories were; many large cities developed. Tenements  multistory buildings were divided into tiny rooms. Crowded conditions caused pollution & foul smelling slums; many had no running water nor sewage or sanitation systems; disease spread rapidly 

What was factory life like? Rigid discipline: You answer to your boss, not to yourself. You worked until the clock told you to stop, not the sun. Workers suffered accidents, no health insurance or workers’ rights. Women were paid less, had to leave children at home and work outside of the home. Child labor was allowed, many orphans, managers beat children, small fingers could work machines.

Early Industrial Life Child Miners Early Factory

Effects of the Industrial Revolution It was a blessing! New jobs Mass production = more quantity Labor unions created to fight for better working conditions Working-class men gained the right to vote People traveled outside of their villages Information and products spread faster by steam boat and railroads It was a curse!  Low pay Unemployment Poor living conditions Breakdown of the family Mass production of goods = less quality
