A period of great change as new industries developed rapidly as a result of a number of new inventions e.g. steam trains, factories. Activity: Look at the picture on the next page and write down as Many things that have changed for this town during the Industrial revolution. 4 Minutes

5 Activity: Turn to P.18 Look at the Tombstones on P.18. What things can you tell about life expectancy from the details on these tombstones from 1842. Look at Source A and the bulletpoints on P.19. Make a list of all things that made people unhealthy (also could use text-P.19). Extension: What factors do you think could solve those problems?

Urbanisation: People moved from the country to the city to find work Many children were now being forced to work long hours in hard jobs. Lots of pollution made the cities unhealthy places to live

War and Conquest: Nursing became more professional under the influence of people like Florence Nightingale Lots of wars meant lots of practice and chances to experiment for the doctors! Europeans moving into hotter climates introduced doctors to new diseases and cures.

New Technology: Railways, the telegraph and steamships allowed people, ideas and items to move around more quickly. Better steel allowed for the invention of the syringe. Better glass allowed for the invention of the medical thermometer and microscope.

Government: The government started to build better sewer and drainage systems. The government passed laws (Public Health Act 1848 for example) to improve the environment in the cities. People began to study how the poor lived and suggest solutions (e.g. Edwin Chadwick)
