Mid-term Exam Review College English 1 Are you ready?

What Will Be on the Written Exam Listening Vocabulary Units 1-4 (Listening 1) Grammar Quantifiers with count/noncount nouns (too much, too many, not enough, etc..) Tips for the Speaking Test Be on time! Don’t waste time. Say as much as you can – remember the Rule of 5 Speak English only Use the grammar and vocabulary we discussed in class Practice and prepare for every question Be ready for follow-up questions

Unit 1 – First Impressions Are first impressions accurate? Give examples to explain. How important do you think first impressions are? Why? What are some ways a person can give a good impression? What are some ways a person can give a bad impression? Have you ever formed a first impression of someone that was wrong?

Unit 2 – Food and Nutrition What’s more important, taste or nutrition? Why? How important is food in your life? Why? Do you agree that if something tastes great, it’s probably bad for you? Why? Do you have a balanced diet?

Unit 3 - Change Is change good or bad? What has been the biggest change in your life recently? How did it affect you? Is there anything in your life right now that you’d like to change? How did your life change as a result of starting university? What are the challenges in changing to a completely different kind of job? What are the potential benefits in changing to a completely different kind of job?

Unit 4 - Advertising Do you think that advertising makes you more likely to buy a product because it is more familiar to you? Explain your answer with examples. Tell me about a time you bought something because you saw it in an advertisement. Which companies do you trust most, and why? Describe an advertisement you’ve seen recently. What techniques did it use to try to persuade you to buy the product? How effective was the ad?

Advice for the written exam. Please write your answers clearly! On the matching, please write a clear uppercase letter (A, B, C, D, etc.). Many lowercase letters (a, b, c, d, etc.) look similar to each other with sloppy handwriting. On the multiple choice questions please circle your answers. If I do not know what your answer is, it is wrong.

Written Test Procedure Clear your desk. Spread out. BE QUIET once I start handing out tests. If you have a question or a problem, please raise your hand and tell me. Write your answers clearly. When you have finished, please put your test paper on my podium. Leave the room quietly.
